Thinking of starting printing my own images fed up with prints going missing in the post funny casts and labs oversharpening my work.

Any thoughts on the best printers out there?

What labs have you been using??? In terms of IQ, can any printer under £500 or even £1k give as good IQ as a photo lab? I have used DSCL for ages now and find them to be excellent. They offer a pro option on prints so they print as you send them so any colour casts etc... will be down to you.

Unless you are printing large volumes or need custom paper, I see no reason to do it yourself.

Thanks for your reply will have a look at DSCL its more for the work flow as well as quality, I do not do large volumes.

Don't want to name names but have not used DSCL before.

I used to use DSCL for nearly all my printing but since buying a couple of DNP dye sub printers (not cheap) I know print 99% of my own. These printers offer matt or gloss and print from 6x4-9x6 (DS40) and 10x8-12x8 (DS80).cost per print is abot 10p (6x4) -70p (12x8) prices approx. Depending on volume would determine id this is a cost effective way for you but they are far better than inkjets and many high st shops are now using them.
 
I dont either, probably 1 order a week or so. It is pretty easy to do, just have all the images ready on desktop, you import everything in and select PRO service so no editing is done. Depends on your connection speed but can take an hour or 2 to upload if lots of images, then simply pay. Get your order in before 12 and its normally with you next day. Worst case I have had is the day after and quality is good, service too on the odd occasion when a print turned up bent. Cant knock pricing either, been using for over a year now.

I also got same images printed at tesco, great way to show customers the quality difference.

Hi John

Budget and size will be the deciding factor for recommendations.

For £100 budget and A4 print max, I'd rec the Canon iP4500 - 4800 (or whatever number they're up to now)
 
Having just had my first ever prints done at DSCL, I can't recommend them enough. 36 hr service and their consumer prints are better than I expected. So much so that I wouldn't consider home printing ever again...

TBH, unless you REALLY know what you are doing, I'd opt for the consumer process where they stretch the colours to get "best" quality. I sent off 5 12"x18", 2x 6"x18" a 10x8 and 4 8"x6" and had them delivered for £15. They are a little more subdued and more yellowish than on-screen (which is calibrated) but this is my first set...
 
If you are looking for an A4 printer. A Canon MG6150 can be had from Amazon for £99.99 at the moment.
 
Thanks for all the post they are all a good help lots to think about. Will give DSCL a try the images I get from the current lab are great just not very reliable with delivery.

I've got an epson p50 which gives decent prints but the cost of ink and good paper is prohibitive for lots of prints. I just use a good 15inch digital photo frame instead, a great way of seeing your pics without a great outlay.
 
I've had the Canon IP4500 for a few years now. It has been reliable and makes superbly detailed A4 prints. Cartridges can run expensive so I refill them with bulk purchased ink. You can get cheap decent glossy paper from Asda or Tesco.
