Hi,:help:

I have my works night out this saturday and have been asked to take the camera with us to get pics of us all. ( canon 450 or 1DmkII with a 550 ex flash ) just wanting to know what setting for best reults. Its in a large function room in a hotel that will prob be quite poor light.
A'm i best on AV or TV, flash up with a bounce card ?( Have i called this right )

Looking to practise a bit in the house before then so looking for a few tips.

Cheers

Had my 5D MkII and 430EX flash with me last Friday for our company party... I put it on Manual and shot at F4 (with 24-105), at 1/125 and popped an extra 2/3rds onto the flash output. Flash had a diffuser on and pointing upwards at an angle (about 75 degrees at a guess)
To be honest, I had to tweak some (mainly those at a wider angle)for light levels in post-processing, but other than that they turned out really well.

Pretty certain Av & Speedlites only work as a Fill In flash....(I only use manual with flash so not sure).

You'll probably need to use manual or one of the Custom modes (takes the pressure off a bit).

What lenses you got? 1DMkII will shoot a black cat in a black room without flash with decent glass on it.

Will be noisy though!

Av will only "fill flash" Tv will shoot the widest apeture. Use manual mode. Try and bounce the flash and diffuse it if you can.

I remember someone posting on here the 8, 6, 4 rule. Thing is, I can't remember which settings should be which!

could be... ISO 800, 1/60th, f4 but happy to be proved wrong

dammit I can't find the thread I'm talking about anywhere. Some guy was disappointed and downhearted with results of shots he'd taken at a kiddies party.

Someone (and for some reason I think it was a female poster) told him that she uses an '8 6 4' rule when using flash indoors.

But I can't find it anywhere. Was quite a while back

Having a camera does not make anyone a photographer!
Say NO - and suggest they employ someone!

I second earlier sugestion, leave your 550ex in ETTL mode.
Use Manual and set 1/125 sec and f4 with iso 200 or 400
You should not have any problems with these settings.

To extend this thread, in the circumstances mentioned, you are likely to be working with different lighting conditions, as in flourescent, tungsten (including coloured Christmas lamps), plus flash.

How would you approach the WB. My thoughts are to use a white or grey card and take a shot in an area of the room that gives you typical ambient lighting and take the image using flash too, then set manual WB using the image you have taken. There isnt a setting that will suit every type of lighting in the room but do you think this method would give a good average WB reading.

Would you agree or what would you suggest.

put the WB on auto and shoot RAW - the filming will be lit with tungsten light - don't use flash!!

Agree with Andrew :)

It was me who posted about 8, 6, 4.

It's one that I picked up from Damien Lovegrove so don't go blaming me if it does not work, suggest actually testing and changing to suit!

It's actually ISO 800, 1/60th, f4. Flash on TTL but you sill need to dial in flash comp as required. I use it at winter weddings where I want to blend the ambient with flash. You do need to learn how to use a flash gun though because if it does not look how you want it to.......what are you going to change? ;)

Suggest looking for Neil Van Nierkik website called Tangents for some good flash work :)

Thanks all, Will go and read it all again and give it a go and have a bit of practise when the kids are in bed.

No Simon, you don't get any points at all because you forgot it!!!! ;)

ISO 800, 1/60 f4 or I'll have it tattoo'd on you! ;)
