O.K. guys having established that these Kites (the ones I am not supposed to be photographing ) come in for food at about 35 mph can someone give me a clue as to what settings you would use.

I have yet to see anything that still motion blurs past 1/1000 of a second :p

I don't shoot birds so just dick around with fast shutter speeds till it looks good (unless you want blur)

I would suggest putting sedatives on the bait forst time round. Then the birds will fly in slower the next time and you can catch em that time :)

If it helps, I used 1/1250" ISO 200 and f4.5 because of the poor light on Friday, if it had been lighter I would have taken it up to at least 1/1500" or higher.
However, it seemed to stop them ok at these settings. The ones near the ground, I was pointing the camera at the feed and taking the shot as they past by rather than panning with them, and it has stopped them at that shutter speed.
Hope this helps

Depends on how much action you want in the picture ?
I have panned fast flying birds at 1/500 to get the background blurred.

Swallows.

I'd suggest pre-focusing on the place where you presume they'll land or use trap focus.
You'll want to have the shutter speed as fast as you can, although you'll probably want some DoF as well. Depending on the focal length of the lens you'll use, you might want to use at least F5.6.

When I tried shooting swallows, it started looking OK at 1/1250, F8, ISO 400 at about 3 PM during summer. I would have gone with less than 1/1250 if I could have.

Nicki,

On the tripod this afternoon my 'good' ones were at f6.3 1/1600 ISO 400.

By 'good' I meant in focus and reasonably exposed.

The image of a big bird, wings outstretched, skimming the ground taken from behind is hardly TP material ;)

BUT when we build our 50foot remote cable we'll be taking them head on I'll bet :D
