I am not long back and the pictures i took with my 50mm f1.8 were really very good. The clear blue sky's certainly help no end compared to the dull overcast sky's in Scotland. I don't know what lenses you have but take plenty of wipes for your hands. Sun cream and camera's don't mix well.
Ii was going to say don't bother taking a camel because they have enough, but you qualified it by saying a camera. I would take a 24-120 lens which should cover most of what you need, and possibly a 70-300mm one as well. I wouldn't change lenses too often due to dust etc.
I'd suggest the D300 and 17-55 only. Perfect combination
But I'd also suggest you take the following: -
- Medium sized paint brush (to brush sand off your camera body)
- Small tea towel (to keep your camera from the blistering heat, and to wipe it from condensation)
- Rocket blower
- Sensor cleaning kit
- Circular Polariser (great to reduce the glare from salt in sand particles)
I travel out the uk as much as possible and the answer to your question is as much as you can physically cary ... egypt aint exactly on your doorstep and you prob wont visit again or at least for a while and I guarantee if you try and skimp on your gear I guarantee youl find yourself saying... if only id brought my..... yes its hot yes youl be angry enough to kick a puppy because you feel like the holiday comany should have offered shurpas but when ypu get back with the shots you hoped youd get and their razor sharp properly exposed once in a lifetime memory shots youl be glad you took it sadly this wont get you off the hook for kicking innocent puppies!
For myself while I'm here in India I've only got a 18-200 with me, and I haven't really needed anything else! It's just far too handy to have anything else on the camera ready and waiting.
