No
I've recently gotten into photography, and have decided it's time to update my camera! I'm looking at buying a digital SLR around the $1000 (Australian dollars) mark and have no idea where to start looking! I've heard that the Canon EOS 1000D is good for beginners. Also, I mostly take sport/action photos, mainly horse photos, so need a camera that will take good quality clear photos. Any help would be appreciated! :)

As everybody says on here, go and try them out and see how they feel. I did that and found the 1000D and 450D to small in my hand and ended up with a second hand 40D. The 40D woul be a good option to look at because of the 6.5 fps. That is so useful fo action photography.

For around $1300 you could get a new Canon 50D, or for $1100 a Nikon D90. I think the 500D, D5000, etc are a bit of a rip off considering how close the pricing is to the much higher specced bodies.

As said though, especially for your first DSLR, second hand could be the best way to go.

Pop down to your local Ted's or wherever and ask to have a play with a few. Get a feel of the different manufacturers, and different levels of cameras. See where the controls sit for your hands, and what you get on best with.

Oh, and welcome. :)
