Okay, here's my take...if you already have a D40x then you'll gain very little by upgrading to a D80. Most of the third party manufacturers are bringing out new lenses with inbuilt motors for the D40/D40x/D60, the DoF preview is of limited use (I never use it) and if you want to bracket then just do it manually ;-)
Money is always better spent on quality glass rather than body upgrades, so I'd go for something like the Sigma 10-20 mentioned above, or perhaps the new Tokina 11-16 f/2.8 (no autofocus on your D40x though) which is a bit more expensive, but better built and with that 2.8 constant aperture for some nice shallow DoF effects when required![Smile :) :)](data:image/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAIAAAAAAAP///yH5BAEAAAAALAAAAAABAAEAAAIBRAA7)
