Yes
What general walk about lens for a camera with crop sensor? I had a Nikkor 18-55mm af-s (none VR) that has died so am thinking of giving Sigma a try. These are the lenses I am looking at so far.

Sigma 18-250mm f3.5-6.3 DC OS HSM 630g SRP £572.17
Sigma 18-125mm f3.8-5.6 DC OS HSM 490g SRP £326.94
Sigma 18-50mm f2.8-4.5 DC OS HSM 395g SRP £306.51
Sigma 18-50mm f2.8 EX DC Macro HSM 535g SRP £???.??
Sigma 17-70mm f2.8-4 DC Macro OS HSM 520g SRP £408.69
Sigma 24-70mm f2.8 EX DG HSM IF 790g SRP £919.56

I have only had one none EX Sigma lens before and it was not great so this is aiming me towards the Sigma 18-50mm f2.8 EX as I am very happy with all my EX lenses. Though I have read good things about the 17-70mm f2.8-4 and its wider zoom range, macro and image stabilisation does appeal to me. Also the huge zoom range of the 18-250mm also appeals.

Thanks for the replies. I shoot all sorts cycling, running, motorsport, building, animals, parties and so on. I have a Sigma 70-200mm, 10-20mm and 30mm it will work along side.

As a walkabout I'm inclined to say the 17-70. The 24-70 must be bloody good at that price, as 70-200 f/2.8s can be had for less

I use the Tamron (I know not a Sigma or on the list) 18-270 much to the amusement of those that know me because they think I'm a lens snob, but it's a cracker for the money!

PS, hence the user name!

I used to have the Siggy 17-70. Great as a general walk-about. Sharp, light and good colours. If you can afford the Siggy 24-70 2.8 you might want to check the classifieds. Last time I looked there were a couple of Nikkor 28-70 2.8 at around £650-£695. This is a fabulous lens for the money. It's a beast though, and you need to be able to live with 28mm at it's widest.

Sigma 17-70mm f2.8-4.5 DC Macro

just got one - very impressed

compliments my Nikon 55-200 VR very well

I had the 17-70, 24-70 and 18-125.
Now I have the 18-50 2.8 (older model)

From all these I would say that the 18-50 2.8 is the best choice for a fast lens for a crop sensor. If you had a full frame body I would suggest the 24-70.

I have not tried the 17-70 OS though so, if stabilization is useful for you, then I would say that you should have a closer look at it (for me OS for such a short lens is not a necessity but needs between photographers vary)
