What size HDD?

Hey everyone,
My girlfriend wants to buy me a HDD for Xmas but I'm not sure what size is need, could someone give me some ideas of which one to get? I don't want her to be spending silly amounts of money so decent priced ones.

internal / external?

what you using it for?

what type / size files are you going to put on it?

how many of these files will you want to keep on it?

silly amount to you = ?????

decent price to you = ?????

External HDD, for backing up my photos mainly all jpeg files, nothing more than £100 really.
 
well, 1TB will store 142,000 (ish) 7MB files (which should be plenty for an average user)

what's your current archive size you want to back up + how many of these do you produce a month & how long do you want to have the drive for till you fill it.

sub £100 will get you a good 1TB one which sounds like it should suffice. Confirm the size yourself and you should be able to get some recommendations on specific devices.
 
I recently bought a 2TB Seagate NAS HDD from PC World for £119.99. Plugs into my router at home and the laptop constantly backs up to it, it's automatic so not reliant on my terrible memory to do so. I also use it as a store for my DVD's as a media centre as the Smart TV's in the house can talk to it and pull films straight from it. Great versatility.
 
You can pick up a Seagate 2TB USB3.0 for around the £80 mark or a Seagate 1TB USB3.0 for around the £70 mark
 
I've got a Western Digital 1Tb 'My Passport' drive for under £100 from Staples recently. The most important things for me were the size of the drive and the fact that it's USB 3.0 which makes it much faster in backing up my files. Make sure you have USB 3.0 on your computer first if that's the speed you get though. If it's going onto a desktop you can always buy a cheap USB 3.0 card to go in it if you need to.
 
with ext hdd's i like to keep the data stored to a minimum, i buy 300-500gb hdd when one has full i get another one, so if one fails i loose maybe 300gb of data instead of say 2TB!! of data, thats just me tho lol i picked my 320gb ext hdd from pc world for £50 i think a few months ago, i shoot RAW + S jpeg and its not even half full yet.

I'm the other way. I would rather store as much in one place as possible and just back them up to other devices.

thats why you should always have at least 2 copies of your data, otherwise its not a backup.

good point mate!! i know i need to do it this way, just not got round to it, it would cost me a hell of a lot to buy 2nd hdd's tho to back up all my stored hdd's, but i guess its worth it then saying losing Gb's of data which is worth.......PRICELESS lol :)
