What size lens for football photography

Morning folks,

Thinking of trying my hand at some football photography at a local club and was just wondering whether a 70-300mm lens will be suitable i.e long enough

Hi Darren.
I started with a 70-300 IS which was OK for some shots, not long enough really to shoot to the far end of the pitch. I usually focus on the action in the half where I'm sitting. The main problem is aperture - 5.6 at the long end. OK in good light but not under floodlights. I now have a 70-200 IS which is better in some ways, but shorter.
