Taking the first step is always difficult, there is so many cameras to choose from now from so many brands. To get that "unbiased" opinion, forum members here will be able to answer them for you. Keep in mind that although we may have knowledge on the matter, our gear is pretty much tailored to our individual styles therefore what we say are merely for guidance. We can suggest things, but we cannot make the decision for you.

The best thing to do is to first figure out your initital budget, and pretty much stick to it. It can get very expensive and it's good practice to figure out your needs and style then slowly build on your system over time.

Throw out a few questions here on the forum regarding some things that you are curious about and would like to have more info on.

Go down to your local camera store, not neccessarily with the intent to buy but have a look at a few models that interest you, and physically hold it in your hand and get a feel for it. Size, weight, functions etc.

Once your mind is made up, then pull the trigger and start shooting!

Solid advice - especially handling the different models before you commit to buying. Choose a reputable shop and you should get impartial, pressure free advice.

There are plenty of helpful people and tips on the forum to help you get going.

Just a tip. Don't get caught up in the 'more megapixels is better' train of thought. It's the simplest of mistakes to make. Just about any DSLR will be capable of producing images that you can print up to A3.

It is very true, more megapixels does not always mean better. For example, try comparing an image from a 14+ megapixel compact point and shoot to a 10- megapixel DSLR.

My old Nikon D70s DSLR which is a 2005 camera had like 6 megapixels. But it still takes better quality images than a compact point and shoot that I bought for my wife a couple of months ago, which has 12+ megapixels and all the bells and whistles. Have a little read up on how sensor size and megapixel count affects image quality, just Googling the subject should bring up some interesting reading for you :)
