Just wondering what spec PC you guys have?

I was wondering if it was worthwhile getting a Quad Core PC with 4gig ram for a fast PC experience during photoshop, Elements etc etc? Is it a worthy buy to go Quad (Got Win 7 64bit). Thanks

E6400 @ 3.2ghz with thermalite HS & FAN
4gb Corsair DDR2 memory
2 x 500gb
1 x 320
1 x 160

ATI 4370 at 650/1100.

If you can afford it, buy it yourself and go with one of intels i3, i5 or i7 processors.

The old dual cores still do a awesome job IMO.

My desktop is;

Vista Ultimate 64bit, Intel Core 2 Duo E7200 2.53Ghz, 8Gb DDR2 PC2-6400 (400Mhz), ATi Radeon X1900, 1x 640GB HD 2x 1TB HD

Runs CS5 and Lightroom no problems. :)

I'd be tempted by the new i3, i5 or i7 processors, and I'd also get 8GB RAM too. ;)

PS Just to say that my laptop had no problems with CS5 and Lightroom either and the specs for that is;
Win7 Home Premium 64, Athlon II Dual Core M320 2.1Ghz, 4Gb RAM DDR2(400 Mhz), 320GB HD

I've just ordered a new system that includes 24gb Ram (8x4gb) as I'm getting increasingly fed up at my existing systems inability to cope with me doing lots of things at the same time.

I want to be running several excel spreadsheets, I want word to be open, I want to have a few browser windows running, I want my CS5 photoshop to be handling a few full frame images, I want lightroom to be busily chugging away with a weddings worth of images, and at the moment - it struggles, it really does. (4gb ram on XP so only 3gb actually being used, with a quad core processor and 3tb of hard drives).

Not sure how much faster the 24gb will be in terms of having a number of programs running, but will let you know once I've tried it. Some might say overkill - but I'd rather have a bit of spare capacity - as I'm now also processing video from the 5dmk2...

You should have added one or two of the Intel X25-M SSDs, they're pretty good for multitasking.

I have:
Intel Core i7-860
4GB DDR3 RAM (Kingston)
64GB Kingston V-Series SSD (first generation)
640GB WD Caviar Blue HDD
Windows 7 Professional x64

It makes RawTherapee happy enough for me, the 3.0-dev is really fast on this machine (well, it should be) :D

Intel core 2 duo E4500 clocked at 2.5Ghz
2Gb DDR II RAM (matched)
160GB HD
1TB external HD
ATI HD 4670 1GB GPU

All this runs Photoshop CS4 sweet as a nut

Intel Q6600 Quad Core 2.4ghz
4GB Matched Corsair DDR2
Windows 7 64-Bit
Raidon X1050 Graphics

Lots of hard drives!

Runs CS5 and handles the huuuuge 7D raw files no problem!

I'm a big fan of more than 4Gb of RAM. I currently have 8 and my next machine will have more.

Core2Quad @ 2.4 GHz
8Gb RAM
Windows 7 HP x64

And I'm about to rip the SSD out of my netbook and put it in my desktop instead

Storage taken care of with a Synology DS408+ NAS box

Some hard disks

Slightly off topic but whats the i7 equivelant of a Xeon now?

Just thinking in a years time I may want to get a dual or possibly quad setup.

Intel Duo E6850 @3.00Ghz

1 x 320gb
Windows 7 home prem 64bit
Logitech Dinovo keyboard and desktop suite ( best keyboard and mouse combo ever made in my opinion )

Awesome performance but then again I dont want a zillion apps running all at the same time.

Intel quad core i7 930 @ 2.8ghz
12GB DDR3 1600MHz/PC3-12800 ram
Saphire HD4670 with 1gb of DDR3 ram
Windows XP 64 bit

3TB of 7200 rpm drives, mostly samsung

AMD Athlon 64 3700+
2GB DDRRam
200GB Harddrive + 40GB for backups.
Rubbish onboard graphics.
Windows XP Pro.

I think I need an upgrade, I have got a new hard drive to plop in though.

Intel dual core E7300 2.66GHz
2 gig DDR2 RAM
80 Gig Samsung HD
250 Gig HD
7900 GTO
Windows XP
500 Gig external HD

The quad core v dual core is your call. There is very little software written to make full use of quad cores, but in the future things will change. However, there is a chance that cpus with more than 4 cores will take over. Although the price of quad cores has come down there are some very cheap dual cores around eg AMD 555 BE - 3.1 GHz, 7 Meg cache and an unlocked multiplier.
A 64 bit OS will allow you to access more RAM, but some folks have problems with their current software not running correctly with a 64 bit OS.

What is your current setup, Gigabyte?

Dave

Vista Home Premium 64Bit has never had a problem with anything I've wanted to run on it. XP 64Bit, on the other hand, was hell.

Those Intel x-25's speed up the OS no end, believe me, the difference in amazing.

Night and day.

For 3 years I had an Intel C2D 2.53 running at 3.8 (with a Zalman 1Plus) which was simply stunning for RAW processing. Unfortunately the chip died after a power spike last week boohoo :(

To fill the gap I bought an old AMD 64x2 2.2 system off my mate for £50 and to be fair it's not bad running XP or 7 but sucks at any kind of batch image processing in PS CS4.

I'm currently looking at an Intel i7/9 desktop or an i5 lappy as I think these would be excellent replacements for my original system, might even get an SSD disk! Time to move with the times :)

Or maybe I'll get a mac...(y)

If you get an i7 920 you can clock them to 3.6 on air alone.

'Im a PC'.........and due for an upgrade

Here's my specs

Intel® Core™ i5-650 Processor - 3.2 GHz
6GB DDR3 - 800 MHz
NVIDIA GeForce GT 320 graphics card with 1 GB dedicated video memory
4x1 TB SATA Hard drives

Windows 7 64bit

Mac Pro

Quad Xeon 3GHz
10Gb FB-Dimm (4x2 & 4x0.5)
3 x 1Tb,1 x 512Gb

Macbook Pro

2.8Ghz Core2Duo
4Gb Ram
512Gb 7200rpm HD

Studio iMac

17" (with external 15" touchscreen monitor)
160Gb HD
2Gb Ram
1.83Ghz Core2Duo

Windows (triple boot XP, Vista & W7)

2.6Ghz Pentium 4 clocked to 3.4GHz
3 x 512Gb

Linux

2.8Ghz Dual Xeon
4Gb Ram
3 x 1Tb HD

Plus a cheapo Windows XP Home laptop and a couple of other desktops.

I think the studio iMac needs upgrading next (although if someone wants to swap a 15" touchscreen monitor for something larger maybe 21" then I am interested!). Would like to stick a 27" iMac in the studio and a pair of the 27" monitors on the Mac Pro.

No sure to be honest, it's whatever spec laptop PC world had in at the time when, in the middle of a particularly large project at uni, my old one tried to melt itself from the inside out.

Windows something, some ram, and a hard drive that's too small :)

Edit: But it runs photoshop cs3 and lightroom fine, so I don't really care :D

I really fancy building a Mini ITX system myself. How does it handle heat? Does it get very hot?

A general question here guys, more ram always better? I only noticed recently the 4gig sticks.

Probably. It depends on how much ram your machine is actually using as you run the software you normally run. My mac pro is now running 10Gb but could be upgraded further. Looking at the specs though there is no point as the machine never uses virtual ram

Agree with most of what's been said, I have an i5 with 8gb of memory, an upgrade to a SSD drive saw significant speed gains in PS, I did a comparison against a 'normal' hard drive here:

Another issue that folk often overlook is setting up photoshop to run efficiently , again I outlined some thoughts in setting up photoshop here:
