What starting lenses for GBP 400?

Based on the discussions in the 'Price conundrum: D90 vs D7000' thread, assuming I go for the D90, I'll have about GBP 400 to put down on a starting lens.

I did want slowly build up a collection of quality lenses, and was wondering if someone could suggest a good all-purpose one to get started?

I was initially thinking of two lenses - the prime 35mm f/1.8 and another one.

Any suggestions please? With these lenses I'll be concentrating mostly on portraits, travel and general photography.

Thank you.

Tamron 17-50mm f2.8? Around £200ish second hand, fantastic performance for the money, a huge improvement over a standard kit lens.

Hello,

I was doing a bit more research and was thinking about these two lenses:
Nikon AF-S 35mm f/1.8 G DX and Nikon AF-S 55-200mm f/4-5.6 VR DX. They'd both fit my GBP400 budget and would give me a nice mix of prime and zoom.

The latter is available on Amazon from a seller called Swan Dice for GBP 121, which seems like a remarkably low price and less than half the price at Jessops. Has anyone used this merchant before?

Thank you.

Please ignore my previous post - I just went through some of the Amazon reviews and it looks like it's cheap on account of being a grey import.
