I started with a 70 300m Nikon VR - which I still use hand held for quite a lot of shots
then a Nikon f4 300mm - I found this lens to be a big improvement over the zoom - it;s good hand held
then a Nikon 300mm f4 plus Nikon TC x 1.4 - need a tripod for this set up

I have just bought a used Nikon 300mm f2.8 VR and Nikon x 2 TC - still to use the lens and the TC

Im loving the Nikkor 80-400 which is easily hand held. Cant be doing with mono or tripods.

Canon 500 f4,big & very heavy but the mutts nuts.

As i said in your other post i have the D300 and F4 300mm. I also have the 1.4 and 1.7 TC i found very little image quality loss with the 1.4 and only slightly more with the 1.7, as for the 2x TC i tried it but lost too much light and quality and quickly sold it on!.

this is from when i shot with nikon ,d300s ,300mm f4 ,and 1.7tc giving 500mm focal length ,hand held shot plenty of other examples on my flickr stream with this combo only ever used a tripod about 1 % of the time usually when hanging around waiting for owls .

Until last week, it was the 500mm F4L ISII. However, that's now been consigned to the 'also-ran' category, as I treated myself to the 400mmF2.8L ISII. It's a bit of a beast, but it's a Revelation!! :D

Nikon 70-200mm f/2.8VR II + TC-20EIII is a good portable set up for me currently, but will soon be getting myself a Nikon 300mm f/2.8 VR II to play with for the wildlife!
Nice one Joe,
The 300 2.8 is great but then you'll want to put the X2 on it as well!....... you'll just LOVE it!......;)

Andy..................

I use the Nikon 200-400 f4 which (now that it has been repaired) gives great results on its own or with the 1.4 TC or the new 2.0 TC - I had the Nikon 300 f2.8 which was superb but the 200-400 gives greater flexibility :)

Canon 500 II f4 with either 1.4x III or 2x III TC's on Gitzo with Wimberley Gimbal. Brilliant.

Handheld on walkabout either 70-200 2.8 II + above TC's or 300 f4

only have 100-400 canon and a 50-500 sigma really wish I had the money for a prime

Nikkor 400mm f2.8 VR AFS. Heavy, though. Handheld is definitely possible, for short periods at least. But a monopod or tripod really helps. Just ordered a Wimberly gimbal head.

Canon 300f4+1.4 extender, great combo imo

You'll love the gimbal. Once your kit is balanced, which doesn't take long you'll wonder how you ever did without it.

Another vote for the Canon 300mm f4L IS here. Easy to handhold and extremely versatile for bagging a first shot of Butterflies, Dragonflies and bigger insects before switching lenses for up close-n-personal. Will take the Canon 1.4x Extender on a 70D, making it 420mm, but I prefer prime as it offers me a better chance of quality.

Also the Canon 400mm f 5.6L but not with an Extender (70D crop-sensor body).

So mostly the 400mm for birds but if I have the 300mm on it's usable.

I use a Nikon 300mm 2.8 VR II and either a 1.4 II or 2.0 III TC. I rarely use the lens bare, only for deer really. I mount that in a Wimberley Gimbal as I am a big wimp when it come to hand holding it. I will soonish be getting a 70-200 2.8 which I'll use with TC for something more portable when I'm just out with the family or don't fancy taking everything.

That said I also have a 500mm fund up and running but that's got a long way to go yet!

until recently i used to use a 170-500 , I am now the proud owner of a 150-500 OS

that said my 70-200 f2.8 gets used a fair bit too

started with a 400mm f5.6 L , still have it, since then bought a 500mm f4 L which was my main, now my main lens is going to be my 800mm f5.6 L, but i also own a 300mm f2.8 ii L as well which i do use with and without converters.

Nikon 300 f4 with a 1.4 TC. Love it and use the lens with and without the TC depending on light & subject. I have the 1.7 TC too but prefer the 1.4 (y)

I'm a fan of the new Sigma 120-300 2.8. It isn't light. Or small. But it is sharp. Really sharp. Combined with the 1.4TC and in the right conditions the 2.0TC it has great reach too.

I use a 400mm f/2.8 and 1.4x & 1.7x converter which performs amazing, for reach its brilliant shooting with the 1.7x converter on the D800 in DX mode gives me 1020mm f/4.8

Have you just bought this Joe?

I generally use a 150-500 , and where possible prefer to shoot prone using a bean bag to rest the lens on
