but not wanting to step on the OP:

I have a D80, have approx 2k to spend on a camera and lens (could stretch to a bit higher I think)...

Should I go for a D700 (second hand (1.4k)) or D7000 (new(1k))?
Am just a keen amateur with no specific specialism, but I am taking photos at a friends' wedding in May, will see how that goes :)

Also, what lens? I would like (ideally)
Nikon 17-55mm AF-S f/2.8G IF-ED Dx (around 1k)

Is this lens an expensive luxury or could you recommend a better/better value bit of glass?

Thanks in advance

Being a Canon man, I couldnt really comment on bodies etc. What I would say though is this;

Whatever the quality of the body, it will only be as good as the lens in front of it. I've been using an entry level Canon body with L series glass and most people can't tell it's an entry level sensor/body. I'd certainly recommend the f/2.8 lens - especially if you're planning to shoot a wedding - lots of dark corners/venues at weddings!

Perhaps the quality lens and the cheaper of the two bodies. The good thing about Nikon, they don't really make a bad body or lens!!

what about a prime lens, they are not as versatile as zoom, but you can get a very cool one for much cheaper, I am thinking to buy a 35mm f1.8, which would allow you to take amazing portraits in dim light, if you want to spend more even a 50mm 1.4 amazing dof (or shallow should i say), after all according to your budget you will still have at vey least £700 left to buy another lens, which i think you could still buy another good lens

I already have a 1.4 50mm, forgot to mention that!
I have an 18-200 Nikon lens with VR which is battered, and a macro 105mm sigma.
Sorry, I should have said that from the outset.

Appreciate your opinions so far gents, keep it coming :)

If you're going to get the D700 you're going to need to invest in some more glass. Both the 18-200 you already possess and the 17-55 you're looking at are DX lenses.
