Its my birthday tomorrow and I expect I'll get 50 or 60 quid off parents/grandparents etc....

Add this to the £100 I got for a job I did the other day, and the possibility of another £80 from the sale of my RC Helicopter.....

.... and I've got a potential £240 to spend on gear....

So what should I buy. ?

I have a Canon 400D, with a kit 18-55 and a siggy 70-300.

I'd love a proper flashgun, like a Speedlite 430 or something, but then I'm also thinking about upgrading the 400D to a 40 or 50D .

I could sell the 400D body, but will I have enough to buy a nice 40/50D AND a flash ?

I'd also like to add a 50mm f1.8 to my kit list.

What should I do ?

I mainly snap the kids and like the odd bit of wildlife.

Decisions desisions ....

The nifty would be handy for the portrait stuff, as would a flash.

I guess the question is what do you think you'd get the most use from?

With £240(ish) burning a hole, you could get a flash AND the nifty :shrug:
 
If you're comfortable with the 400d, I wouldn't recommend upgrading to a 40d. Photography is all about the pictures, not so much the camera. If I were you I would upgrade that 18-55 lens, because I'm presuming it's the old mkII one (without IS) which is a really crappy lens from my experience. You can get a good 50mm 1.8 and a good standard zoom within your budget if you buy second hand.

Good standard zooms to look out for are the ever popular tamron 17-50mm, and the sigma 17-70mm. Even upgrading to the newer 18-55mm IS would be a good move IMO
 
Yes, the 18-55 is a non IS one.

But I've never had a problem with it to be honest. I've heard a few people say it should be upgraded first, but can't see what the problem with it is...

I really fancy the flash, so I think £100-120 of my budget will go on a used 430ex. I've seen a few on ebay fetch about that.

So, with £120 left, I could either upgrade my 18-55, or keep it and get the 50mm 1.8.

Another vote for flash, it has a great impact on pics, more so than any lens imo
