What to buy

Hi All,
I want to get sharper Motorsport photos and am thinking of a new lens maybe 70-200 f2.8 (sigma) or maybe a canon 100-400. My camera is a canon 40d with a sigma 18-250 lens but after talking to someone at work they suggested I should upgrade my camera body but am I right in thinking it's more about the lens that you use?. If it is the body I should upgrade what would be the body to go for.

I would suspect its your lens and / or technique. Obviously it depends on how quick the Motorsport is, but I've the 40D and can get very sharp pics with it.
There are occasions where I get sod all, due to my technique and how quick and the direction the cars are going, but that's then the challenge to get a sharp shot.

I would be looking at upgrading your lens...

If it's a choice of lens or camera, then it's a new lens without a doubt. The focal length required depends on how close to the action you can get. If your current lens has enough reach then a canon / sigma 70-200mm sounds the way forward, although which one you get is a whole new arguement. If it's more reach, I'd consider the 300mm f4 and a 1.4x converter before the 100-400, but I've seen plenty of sharp pics with the longer zoom to know it's a capable piece of kit.

Agree, new lens.

70-200mm F4 is the next logical upgrade, it's a cracker! £350ish second-hand. Generally this should be long enough, the 100-400 is a big jump up in cost and not as fast.

If you can get on with a pull-push lens, I think the 100-400mm Canon might be of more use at lots of circuits.

Certainly wouldn't blame your camera.

Me personally I would go for the 100-400 as 200 is just not long enough at times.
I have one and it workes very well.

Thanks for the info all off you i thought the body was up to the job and I think it's more reach I need as the photos look good until I crop in on them..... Thank you all.
