What to do for Canon upgrade?

Well the trusty 400D is now in need of upgrade. I shoot action sports and need a faster frames per sec to shoot sequences. My other subjects tend to be domestic animals and people. Now here is the query. I have seen a brand new 40D body for £575. I have read this handles noise better than than 50D, but is there anything that should make me want to spend extra and get the 50D, or even wait for the 60D?

In an ideal world my upgrade path would be something like the xxD, then a 5DII for portraits etc, whilst keeping the xxD for sequences and action sports stuff.

Comments appreciated, as is offers of insanely cheap second hand versions:lol:
 
I went to a 40D as the 50D was just out. I've been very pleased with it - my main reason at that stage was the difference in cost (50D was brand new out so at full price), for my needs the 40D was more than adequate.

I have seen a thread on here re noise and the 50D and settings to try - might be worth looking at. :thumbs:
 
I have a 50d and love it, but I never had a 40d, I was thinking of getting one when a 50 came along at the right price.....
 
I have 2 40D's (got my second in Feb), they are great cameras, not had any real issues with noise, as has been said there is a thread about settings and noise for the 50D, but I would say 40D and invest the rest in glass.
 
I'd upgrade to a 1d mkII if I were you. you cant beat it for focus speed and fps. a good sh one can be picked for less than a 50d.

Noise is not too bad either and you get a 1.3 rather than a 1.6 crop.

They do weigh a bit though!
 
I didi think about that, but the problem is a lot of skate shots are shot with fisheye, and didn't know what to do about a fisheye if i went for one. The Canon 15mm is for full frame isn't it? So if there is a suggestion for a fisheye that would work as well as my 10mm on my 400D then would def look that way.

Is the 40D a sensible upgrade path then? People seem pleased with them?
 
I've been reading a few reviews on the two as I'm thinking along the same lines.
The main thing that is steering me towards the 40D is that in one review it was commented that the sensor in the 50D will put budget lenses to shame and it suggested that investing in something on a par with the L series was required.

I've just bought the Tamron 17-50 f2.8 which I don't think is budget but is still way off the L quality. So I figure that for what I'll be using it for, the 40D will be more than sufficient, and the extra money can go towards another lens or monitor etc.

That's what i'm planning in doing when i upgrade from my 400d.
 
For the money I think the 40D is incredible value. I have two of them for shooting mainly wildlife and to be honest, they do everything I require of them.

I'd say a 40D or 50D will be just the job for you; even if it's only for the high fps. I've had a 40D for ages now and the fps still amazes me even now. I usually have it turned down to the lower of the two available speeds.

But I wouldn't wait for the 60D, because by the time the 60D is getting close, you'll be wondering if you should wait for the 70D. And just think of all the shots you'll have missed by then.
