what to hire for silverstone MotoGP

right people i am off to the GP for the friday and saturday, i have a 5DM3 and i canon 70-300L, i have read a few things saying at time 300 is a little short, so i looked at lensforhire and i would really like to hire the 200-400L but at £327 its well out of my price, plus its booked out.

my 2 options are the 1.4III extender or what about the canon 400 F5.6L

If you're happy to go with 2 lenses, then the 400mm would be your best bet. If you want to stick to a single lens, then the 100-400 is obviously more versatile.

You could always go for it and get the 500mm f4!

well ill be taking my 24-105mm as well. that 500mm seems like a beast,

I have the same body with the 400mm f5.6. - I got a few shots from the f1 on my Flickr (link in sig). I used a 1.4 for a lot and the results were pretty good but bikes are a lot smaller than cars... Depending on what kinda shots you want the 500 f4 may suit your needs better if you can stretch to hireing that

jonathan, were thoughs shots hand held??? 500mm would i need a monopod??

If you haven't had a 500 prime before then i would say forget it, i can hand hold for a max 20sec things become a bit shaky after that.
Just lugging one around somewhere like that is going to be a major PITA.

The 400 f5.6 is really light so easily hand holdable but I'd always recommend a monopod for most Motorsport situations. It's just easier to pan and stabilise at slower shutter speeds - some people say they prefer to handhold, I say I get more keepers than those people (just guessing of course hahaha)
