what to organise photo's with on macbook, ilife, nikon software other?

not looking to spend on software.

i used to organise photo's manually in my own folders and files on windows pc, but just picked up a macbook 2008.

should i use ilife or software from nikon d90 box?

or other and reasons for choice?
 
iPhoto should do it for you, just import the pics you want into your iPhoto library
 
I understand that you don't want to spend out - certainly iPhoto does a great job. It is easy to organise and add tags - even geo locations to build a map of the places you have been. I find that anything other than basic edits a real chore or impossible and use Photoshop Elements 8 for Mac. About £55.

If you have both a Mac and a laptop there are two issues on the horizon. You will end up buying an iMac and need a way to hold the photos centrally - a NAS type device.

definitely use iPhoto since you already have it. it's so usually friendly and like all mac stuff it just works. Face tagging, searches, it's awesome
 
Picasa for mac; reasons: it scans your HD and finds the images, but leaves them just where they are and shows a folder-tree view, then you can drag images around and create albums. Also lets you say which folders to show/no show, rescan etc. Let's you add keywords, finds faces and indexes images by face - uncanny, makes you wonder about the surveillance society we live in when something this good is available for free. It interfaces seamlessly with google's web albums where you 1GB of free space. It's free.

Unless you can make photo books, calendars, slideshows and greetings cards with it, sounds like a poor mans iphoto

coming from an old pc, i use to create folders and sub folders and copy images from sd card to them on my desktop. i guess i could go down this option again on the mac, but thought be best to use something.

as i found out recently having swapped my old HDD out and plan to use it as a backup disc, and tried it in my pc, it wouldn't pick up. this is new to me, but i understand it something to do with file system type.

is there one which can share between pc and mac, fat32 i read, but limited to 4gb on each batch and can't be used with time capsules
