Hello everyone,

Im looking to get my first dslr and after 4 weeks of solid research well into the nights, Im back at square one. I thought shopping for a p n' s was hard...

I was told that the lens is more important than the body, is this true?

I hope it is because Ive found a lens that 'seems' perfect for me, Tamron 17-50, only I dont know what to use it with. Ive dwindled it down to these.

500d
d90
d5000

However, (theres always a 'however' with cameras isnt there) there has been a problem with this lens and the d90 + its a tad on the expensive side.

Im sure Ive left out some important information but thankyou for any opinions.

I'd say that the d90 would be the one to choose, maybe try and get one used?
But go into a camera shop and have a feel of all the cameras first, see what you like best.

If you've got a grand to spend + ~£300 for the lens, why not go for a dearer lens like the 24-105 F/4 L or 24-70 F/2.8 L 17-55 f/2.8 IS and get a cheaper body like the 450D (unless you want video as i notice all those bodies have)

....of course you dont have to spend it all ;) accessories are costly as well

The 17-50 is a pretty impressive lens for the money,if the op is prepared to go for a secondhand one that would leave enough money for a good quality body too. Nikonwise I'd suggest a D90 over a D5000, a new D300 might even creep under the budget (or get close) as prices start to slide :)

Either go for a second-hand EOS 5D (about £750 these days) or get a Fuji S5 pro or D200, used (about £500). If new I'd go for the D90 or 50D.

Like FITP says, used will get you more bang for your buck - I got a mint 17-50 off fleabay for £160. Seen a lot of them for under £200 used.

It's a knife-sharp lens so tam it up with a good sensor and you're laughing :)

You should consider whether you want IS in the lens, that will cost a bit more but still leave enough to buy the 500D body.
