What to take ?

Off in a couple of weeks to turkey , taking my D7200 +. 80-400G for any long range birding ., now the question is do I take a couple of mid reach lenses or just use my recently acquired iPhone 17 pro.max with it’s excellent camera and video system . I’m veering towards the latter for ease of use and lightness .
I must add I’m not yet proficient with the I.phone only had it since Saturday but I think I’ve got it fairly well worked out
 
I can't stop myself from pixel peeping so I know I would probably be disappointed with some phone shots and would regret not taking something better. I'd take a standard prime (anything in the 24 at a pinch, 28, 35, 40 or even 50mm range) but many people are happy with zooms. Do you have a standard range zoom or prime?
 
What kind of places will you visit and what will you do with the pictures? Turkey has some fantastic archeology that's easy to visit and some great landscapes. If all you want is memories and to share a few pics with family then the phone is probably adequate. Otherwise I'd take a walkabout zoom and a fast prime.
 
Everyone is different but I take my 20-70f4 for daytime use and a 35f1.4 for when the light disappears and that's it.
 
I guess it depends on what you will shoot? Is it a special place to you? Will you go back one day? Will you be happy with mobile phone IQ?

I know that doesn't exactly answer your question directly though.

Our summer holiday to Cornwall, I took (digitally) the A7Riii, 35GM and Tamron 70-180mm to cover me. The X100f done daily duties as such.
 
I will be near a nature reserve calis beach ,hence the longer lens that also has good close focus ability. , , but dumping another heavy short lens also means I can just use a messenger bag as opposed to a backpack . I also have an Olympus ep.l with a zoom lens so I’ll chuck that in to . And although I’m insured theft on holiday is always on the back of my mind . I think the combination of D7200, e.pl + zoom and I.phone will cover my needs for a week.
I’ve got a couple of weeks to play with the phone so I can change my mind if disappointed

Personally, I'd take a short zoom to cover the wide end - the 18-200 would be my choice.

Enjoy the trip.

I've just come back from Menorca, instead of taking my Nikon gear and a few lenses, filters etc, I took my old Olympus E-420 and the 12-60 f2.8 lens, got a few really nice photos, and everything fitted in my hand luggage with all the other stuff I needed to take, medication and chargers etc, best decision I've made while travelling.
 
If it was me, I'd take a compact with a long zoom and an action camera. The phone would be back up.
That said if it's a family holiday, will they be annoyed at you not giving them attention?
 
The phone is more than good enough, shoot in RAW, it's amazing how well it nails daytime exposure and WB compared to how much you have to correct a camera RAW file, do not use HDR though.

This is what I find as well. Great when viewed on a phone, but on the big screen (and printing) then anything but the best of light often reveals the limitations.
 
I'd say take a 50mm equivalent. as can always shoot vertically and stitch if you want wider shots. Or just landscape orientation with it.
 
Pretty much decided I’ll be taking the D7200 + 80-400G the lens is a superb copy and gives a good reach with sharp images nearly as good as my Z8 combo . It also focuses really close to, . Plus the Olympus ep.l8 with a small zoom fitted and the I.phone for family and macro shots . The cameras easily fit in a messenger style bag without being to weighty .
This fits the airline size and weight requirements as well and is well within my insurance limit . I may yet decide to fit in an another lens but it will be decided a bit nearer . Don’t need chargers either as my two spare batteries for the z8 work in the d7500 and come in a built in case/ charger just need the u.s.b lead .

I'm off to Thailand later this year and was thinking of taking a tripod but photography can take over so I'll stick to just my A7cII and 40mm.

I'm off to Thailand on Saturday for 3 weeks..... Will be taking my Zfc + 24-70 f4S and my Df ... I keep a couple of F-mount lenses at our house over there so don't need to take any more with me. I also have a tripod there.
 
I have just come back from my 3rd major holiday around europe in the last 12 months... Got everyhting I wanted using my samsung phone... Theres nothing I could have got with my pro equipment that i didnt gte wiht the phone... I have one pic as a 70x50 canvas and its perfect..

I looked at other poeple on hot days lumping round dslrs with lenses feeling sorry for them..
