What to upgrade to

I currently have a D40 with kit lens 18-55mm which has not been greatly used but I am going to get back into it again. I am think about upgrading my camera and getting a couple of new lenses I was thinking about
D5200 with kit lens 18-55,
prime lens 50mm f1.8
telescopic lens 70-300mm

Is the D5200 a good choice for an intermediate camera?
I like doing urban and night photography and would like a lens just for family photos etc.

Is this a good choice any advise would be great.
 
Have a friend, who upgraded his D40 to a D5100. Couldn't be happier, so perhaps spare a few £ here?
 
Is it worth upgrading your Camera if you have hardly used it? I'd suggest spending the money on getting out and using it! Maybe get a nifty fifty and a tripod to facilitate the areas you want to look in. It seems silly to fork out for a new camera if you don't use the one you have.
 
Chris-red yes you are probably right may just get the 2 lenses and get back out there and then upgrade the camera at a later date
 
Has anyone had any experience with Nikon af-s 50mm f/1.4 & f1.8 as there is a big difference in price and was wondering if the extra is worth it
 
Hi.
I had a D3100 and loved it. Was a really neat camera with good quality photos. I believe the D3200 is even better. I had the 18-55 kit lens, a 35mm F1.8 prime and the 55-200mm.
The 35mm is especially good, crisp photos with excellent Bokeh. I used it around town as well doing some urban shots. The 50mm also seems a good lens and both these prime lenses are excellent value.

I have just upgraded to a used D7000 and kept the 35mm and 55-200mm for it. Just brought a Sigma 17-70 and so far the combination is excellent.

D5200 / D5100 is a good camera and a worthy upgrade. Recommended.
 
I would say that unless you need to shoot at hi ISO stick with the D40 for now. An upgrade is always nice but you need to get back into it first and realise where, if anywhere the D40 is holding you back.
Regarding the 50mm, I have the f1.4 and it is better built than the f1.8 unless you are going to use it at f1.4 then you are probably best saving your money.
 
If the D40 is the reason you're not taking photos, then changing camera might make a difference. But if you don't work out why you're not taking more photos, any "upgrade" is only going to produce temporary blip until the novelty wears off and you're back to not taking photos again. Sometimes it's just life getting in the way. Get to the point where you want to take photos again (if the mood strikes you, you won't care what camera you have to hand) and then review your gear. Start carrying a camera with you every day, if your phone has a camera start using it. Regularly. You may find that the "upgrade" you need looks more like a pocketable compact than a DSLR.

Go take a photo. Right now, after reading this thread. It doesn't matter what it's of.

thanks for all your comments and Alistair I did take some photos and have decided to keep my D40 and order Nikon af-s 50mm f/1.4 and carry on using my D40
