Yes
My computer needs more RAM I think, but I don't know what type it is .
The pc is an Intel Pentium 4 3.06 GHz, 1 GB RAM, Radeon X550 and is about 5-6 years old. The box it came in is buried deep in the loft. How can I find out looking on the computer or can someone tell me from the info above.

Thanks in advance,
Mick.

pentium 4 CPU normally go along with DDR2 ram.
You will need to know your motherboard as many P4 chipset/motherboards wont take more than 1 or 2 gb of ram anyway.

Thanks for the replies.
The pc is a Packard Bell. I have just done a system scan from the site recommended by mrgrubby and it tells me I have an Imedia 1618 motherboard and I can increase the RAM by 1 or 2 GB in matching pairs of memory chips.

Cheers,
Mick.

Go here and download Everest Home Edition. It'll tell you everything you'll ever need to know about your comptuer's hardware :)

I have the same processor and I'm using DDR RAM not DDR2. I used a downloaded scanner too as the crucial one was throwing up some weird results. I'm doing a similar upgrade soon as I only have 512mb ram. Let us know how you find it after the upgrade...

Hi, another new program that has just been released is called Speccy. You can download it from http://www.piriform.com/speccy . We use it quite frequently in our shop and it has replaced CPU-Z for us. It's all down to personal preference I suppose.

I would say for your model you would need DDR PC3200 Memory, this has gone very expensive lately, as has DDR2.

Be aware that Speccy is still in Beta at the moment. If you want to try it without installing, a portable version is offered. Piriform also offer Ccleaner, a very useful little program for other purposes.

if your going to install them your self just take one out and have a look. unless you intend to buy them off the net which would mean openinig it up twice.

Best just to have a look. If you have never looked inside a PC and intend to change the RAM yourself, best to find out now if you a confident to do it.

It is not just the size of RAM installed and the max installable that is important. You also need to know how many RAM slots the motherboard has and how the current RAM is configured. E.g. if the MoBo has two slots and can take a Max 2 Mb with 1 Mb installed in two 512kb chip sets, then you need to know that you want to buy two 1Mb RAM.

You also need to know the RAM speed as many older MoBo's will not support faster modern RAM. To find this out you need to find the spec of the installed MoBo, find the name of the board which will be printed on the board it's self.
