what use for 180 2.8?

Hi All,

I love my 300/f4 AF, so the 180 2.8 has caught my eye as a nice prime. Built like a tank, looks like it should be sharp as anything. But, I don't really have a use for it. If I want wildlife, the 300 gets the call. If I want shorted, a tele zoom gets used.

That got me thinking. What was the original intent of the 180 f/2.8? It is too short to be a sport and wildlife telephoto. It seems a little long for anything indoor and most portrait. So what would it have been used for?

It's Canons longest true macro lens, and from all reports it's stunning. I was looking at one a while ago to go on my 5D2 but the only downside is no IS and I shake like a leaf at the best of times.
 
Camera: Nikon D90 (unless Rick shoots Canon as well)

You're thinking of the 180 f/3.5L

Yep, I'm talking about the Nikon, non macro. It is a prime 180, 2.8.

I get the 180 Sigma as a macro. Would love to have one myself. I use my -200 zoom as a macro with filters up front. A 180, 1:1 macro would be great.

Indoor/evening sports/stage in the days when zooms were slower and optically much inferior.

Landscape, street portrait, indoor sports ... anything you would use the long end of a 70-200 for :D
