Hi all,

I currently have a Canon 40D with a Sigma 17-70mm which I find fine, and a Sigma 70-300mm which I don't really like. Its the cheap one, and I don;t find it gives very sharp of good quality images, they are ok but I think I want something better now.

Ok what are my options for around £250? I hired a Sigma 70-200mm 2.8 once and it seemed nice but some said it can be soft at 200mm, and I'd mostly be using this range. Also not sure if I'd rather have the extra 100mm of a 70-300.
That and the Sigma is £350+ used too.

Im 100% happy to buy used, but looking for good recomendations as to what would be a decent upgrade from the current Sigma?

Stretch your budget a bit and get a 70-200 f/4L.

Very, very sharp, you won't find a single bad review of that lens. If you like to handhold a lot in bad light, consider saving longer for the IS version, if not, the non IS is still a brilliant lens.

If you miss the reach, you can add in a 1.4 converter later, and it'll still be far sharper wide open than the sig 70-300.

I Have the sigma 70 - 200 2.8 and it can get a little soft at 200 , but until I can push for the canon 70-200 2.8L ( at £1999 istead of the £370 I paid for the siggy )I will have to put up with it :)

You will need to stretch your budget if you wish to get away from the soft at high end bit.
Maybe to around the £400+ mark

Now there's a canon 55-200 that seems to get rave reviews by all who've had it and I think it's around £200 but may be wrong - don't have it myself.

Or save a bit longer for a 70-200 f4 or even longer for the f2.8!

Hmm problem is I never get chance to save for camera gear due to other things, so when I have the cash its a rare thing and usually a one off. Also £400 is alot, i'd probably be better off spending top money on either a 10-20mm or a better walk-about lens as I'd use that more. Tough one really.

Would like more info on the 55-200 if possible.

don't know about a 55-200 but I've heard many good things about the canon 55-250IS but I ended up going for the 70-200f4 with my 40d when I made the choice, the quality is great but I am beginning to find I miss the stabilisation. I have just invested in a 1.4x teleconverter and the extra reach might come in handy.
hope that helps?!

Andrew.

Come to think of it I may have been talking about the 55-250 which is about the same money.

Am having a look to see if I can find anything on either ..........
