what works for you

As a result of my 52 so far I've decided I need to think about crops a bit more. I tend to use the traditional 6 x 4 or multiplication of it.

So what do you use? What ratios work for you, why and what genre of photography do you apply it to?

wow 42 views and no opinions! :(

Come on folks don't be shy.:lol:

99% of the time I keep the same 3:2 or 2:3 that the photo started life as.

Just to be slightly oddball, I like 5x7
Can't pinpoint quite why and I have to be honest I've no experiemented with much else recently - I think I should.

I always tery to keep to 3:2 wherever possible as that is usually what I saw when I looked through the viewfinder. There are occasions though where I will change it if, when processing, I feel it will enhance the image although I try not to make it too square. Not sure why, but I always think that rectangular is a more natural look for a photograph.

*awaits backlash fro the square format film photographers!* :p

I either keep to 3:2 or for print sales crop to 5:4. Its much easier to find frames in 5:4 ratio and 10" x 8" prints sell well

Not to be pedantic - but 6x4 IS 3x2, so now idea why you didn't opt for the more usual smaller numbered version as everyone else here did

Anyway... I shoot everything full frame and crop as necessary later for whatever output is required. IF, and it happens rarely, someone wants a shot for a specific frame they have which is not a 3x2 format, then I bear that in mind and shoot accordingly

For instance - at one Wedding I'd shot all the kids full frame, and the family wanted all prints as 10x8s -which chopped their feet off! So I advised them that A4 was their nearest 'inc. feet' option, which made it a little harder for them to find suitable frames. Now I tend to leave a bit more space around the subject at Weddings to allow for standard print sizes, but only if it doesn't compromise the image

I know many Pros who only show clients non-standard formats so they can't find an off-the-shelf frame and have to buy the much more expensive one from the Pro - personally, I don't like that unless the image absolutely calls for such an odd shape

The subject determines the crop. I have no hard and fast rule.

Though for event photographs, I shoot with enough space to crop to either print at 7x5 or 8x10.

7:5 generally. Probably more force of habit than anything else. It's the size I'm used to printing at, so 3:2 just ends up looking a litle too long and thin.
If the subject calls for it though, I'll do whatever. Square, panoramic etc...

Thank you for your responses, it would appear that the standard sizes are standard for a reason. I will have a play with crops, I've started to look at square crops for some subjects too. Maybe I'm thinking about it to much and just need to try different crops with an image to see what works best.

Dave, I don't know why I don't use 3x2 either, never thought about taking it down to the lowest common denominator!:bang:

Thanks again and sorry if the question was one of those obvious / stupid ones, I'm good at asking them;)

I don't think the question was stupid at all Mark - it's given some an insight into the sneaky world of some Pros

I went 7x5 for all my crops so it was easier to do larger prints as in A4/A3/A2

Thanks Dave, you're too kind:thumbs:

Sorry my brain is currently off line, how does this make larger prints easier..... told you I was good at asking stupid questions:lol:
