What would be a good starter Lens....

Got a 400d & just bought a 450d.
I have got the sigma 17-70. Started with the kit lens (non is) my copy did seem pretty good, but saw the sigma for a good price & couldnt resist!

Would totally recommend it.

The Canon EF-S 17-85mm is a great all-rounder, you should be able to pick a used one up sub £200.

The 17-55 that comes as the kit lens with the 400 is meant to be 'a good kit lens'

What type of pictures have you taken in the past? When I started, I had no idea how 17-55 related to what I used to take.

Would suggest you perhaps trying in a shop the 17-55 and see whether you would like a longer reach, or a wider lens, if this lens it not enough

the kit lens is ballpark right length for most stuff, if you going that route try to get the 18-55 IS as it is optically superior (but more expensive)

If I started again I would consider a 50mm prime, but thats my personal choice almost certainly not yours

If I'm not mistaken the 17-55 is not a kit lens, the 18-55 is. I'm from the dark side though so my Canon knowledge is limited!

Hi Dave

Most people seem to start out with the general 18-50 or 85ish lenses and then decide from here what they are missing.

Your budget will very much determine what you are going for. If you are are getting a deal with the camera the kit lenses are often worth getting as they cost a comparatively neglibeable amount.

The 50mm f1.8 is relatively cheap around £70 I found made me think more about composition and what I was aiming for with the shot than the zoom did.

My wife got the 28-135mm Canon, and whilst some will denegrate the image quality of his lens, it gives a wide coverage and good (for our eyes) results.

If your preference is for wildlife I'd get a longer lens and also the 50mm which is very light and you can use in low light as well.

Good luck and enjoy!

Al

Canon 18-55 or Sigma 17-70 depending on budget.

Thanks for all the advice so far guys.
I have just bought an EOS350d and it is coming with a 22-55mm lens, is this going to be any good or shall I sell it and buy one of the above?

Do you mean the 18-55mm Kit lens? I don't know of a 22-55mm lens that fits a Canon! :)

Sigma 17-70 if you value the wide (it's macro abilities are good too) or 24-70 (or 24-60 if you can find one, these are stunning) will do for most things.

Cheers
James

Hmm not too sure the chap I am buying for said 22-55mm but must be a misprint?

Here is a pic of it if that helps to tell what it may be?

I'll just echo the comments about the Sigma 17-70. Its a good walk about lens.
But then again, it all depends what your budget is?

:plusone: Like everyone else said the Sigma 17-70 is a great walkabout lens, so much better than the kit lens IMO
