What would be your perfect zoom lens?

in fact any f2 zooms would be great
even if they were APS-C only

That's the thing, zooms are all about convenience so the ideal one would be exactly like that - maximum convenience but with none of the compromise.

In reality they are, always, significantly compromised in one way or another. Too soft either at some or all focal lengths, too distorted, too slow, too heavy, too big.. to be honest I hate zooms! So my ideal would be to get rid of them entirely and just have about a hundred sharp and fast prime lenses covering the whole range instead.

And a servant to carry the bag.

lenses in general are a compromise
good sharpness vs good bokeh
good close focus vs good infinity focus
sharpness wide open vs sharpness stopped down
corner sharpness vs filter thread/bulbous front element (a la nikon 14-24)

when you introduce floating elements you can get a lot less compromises, but a lot larger price

they could make these dream lenses today- but not for what we could afford most likely
look at the cameras they use for HD broadcast- I think they have f1.8 super zooms, but cost $100,000 and weigh a hell of a lot
 
Canon 100-400mm f2.8 that doesn't cost a bloo€y fortune and doesn't have a built in TC.
