What would cause this?

I have taken about 150 pictures over the last couple of days due to going to Farnborough. When looking at the pics on the computer I noticed that it had a couple of files that stated 'no picture data' and it was a red cross in a square. Now I took a couple of shots out of my window today at the sunset, and at first they were all there, but when I looked on the card afterwards I only had 1 of them and the other had gone funny again.

Just wondering if anyone knows what would cause this?

Ive got a 'standard' slower one. The one that I installed was a class 10 sandisk 4gb 30mb/s card. I havent tried the old one yet.

Just dont want to lose any shots that I take. Has anyone else lost the odd shot from all the shots they have taken. 1-2 isnt many when you think how many are taken, but its still not nice to think you could lose the one shot that you really didnt want to lose.

Do they just become unviewable incamera or on the PC as well? Because I used to find if I previewed shots from my D60 on my PC and then put the card back in the D60 it wouldn't give me an in camera preview again. Was still fine on the PC though

I used to lose the odd shot when I was doing a continuous sequence or images in rapid succession using MyMemory memory cards with my D70. :( I couldn't change the camera, so I changed the memory cards to Sandisk. ;)

Since I changed to Sandisk CF cards I haven't had any problems since. Though I don't have the D70 anymore, the cards seem to cope with the higher frame rates of the D300S. :D

(just jinxed myself there I know )

It happens, regardless of card or camera. Even with Sandisk. Only this weekend I had two successive write errors on a Sandisk SD taken on a GF1.

There are two ways to delete photos on the card. Use the camera to delete them all. Or use the camera to format the card. You should always use the format method. First, it's quicker. Second, it sorts out any file structure problems which may lead to corrupt photos or other card errors.

I never have problems with my D5000 and SanDisk.

I totally agree with this though, might help with your problems.

I think this is an SD card issue.

I've noticed it various times over the years with SD cards, randomly corrupted files.

The last 2-3 years I've only ever owned CF cameras and can 100% say I haven't seen a single corrupt or irretrievable file, and that must be from hundreds of thousands.

Just want to quote this before you go smashing up an SD card that might be perfectly fine!

To emphasise, sometimes previewing files on windows directly off the card can cause it to become unviewable on the camera. Don't know if the same issue exists with a Mac, or if it's a consumer camera pc combination or what. But double check that you're unable to view it on both your pc/mac and on the camera. I've seen this happen before on perfectly fine SD cards. It hasn't happened on my D300 as of yet, BUT I've changed my workflow. I always copy all of the photos straight to the PC before viewing. I've also started shooting raw, so this has also avoided the situation.

I had this exact same problem after I formatted my Sandisk 16GB SD card in Windows rather than by the camera. Random pictures lost, normally at the start of shooting a series of pictures.
Once I formatted it with my 500D I haven't lost one since.
