Just general question...I have a 40d and currently have the following lenses:
Canon L 24-105 usm
Canon 50mm 1.2
Sigma 70-200 2.8
Sigma 24-70 2.8

I shoot weddings and portraits but may have £1000 to spend on something else so am looking towards new / second hand lens.

Any suggestions on what to buy or replace etc

If it was my money Melissa, I'd get a 5DMkII. It'll give additional framing options with all your existing lenses and have the added bonus of providing a second body to shoot side by side with.

I would love a 5D but am I right in thinking that my current lenses (all bar the L series) will not fit a full frame camera and so would have replace them aswell ?
I know I didn't put full model numbers by the lenses but cant remember the exact names.
 
All of those lenses will fit full frame. Get a full frame camera, doesn't have to be a 5dii though, get a 6d. Much better af that the 5dii and better high ISO. You are not far off new prices so should get a mint one.

Do you think that the 5D2's AF and Iso capabilities aren't up to the mark for weddings and portraiture, Sam?

No idea. But if you are going to upgrade why not get the best you can? I've noticed on the classifieds that really good 5dii go for about £900 so why pay similar money for older inferior technology? I was only trying to offer an alternative. You know more about this than me, so why is a 5dii better in this situation? In a dark church with low light you might need high iso. I did in the cathedral I went into yesterday when I had a couple of hours free.

For Melissa's stated usage then I think that the 5D2's joystick for AF point selection is a benefit and also the faster flash sync speed might help on occasions......just my opinion though. It looks like, feels like and operates very similar to the 40D she has and that is probably the biggest benefit when using two bodies in a wedding environment.

Then I take back what I said. I was only taking a stab in the dark looking at specs and thinking what I would chose if I was going to get a new camera at that price point. I'm also a bit of a gimmick monkey so was basing it on things like gps for when travelling and having built in wifi, which I would imagine would be useful for a photographer when they are trying to back up.

Either way, my experiences when I was looking at 5dii's second hand was that it's quite difficult to find a good one. Many have been used professionally and show it. But they are about, and I think there are a couple in the classifieds at the moment.
 
Thanks for all your comments...now I know my existing lenses will fit...the 6d is looking very tempting but yes I do like the joystick thingy but guess its just what you get used to.

On the 6d...I see the fps is quite a bit slower than my current 40d. I shoot Ice hockey on occasion...do you think I would notice a significant difference ?
 
THIS guy prefers his 40d to the 6d.

I'd personally rather have a top of the range crop, than a bottom of the range FF.

Personally, I'd take the bottom of the range FF over an APS-C camera any day of the week, top of the line or not. There's no universally right or wrong choice here though; cameras are tools and you choose the one that best fits your needs/skills.. Use the one that does what you want and you can't go wrong.

Good point. I shouldn't have said "personally" but rather the 'best' tool for the job (weddings in this case) would be the one that's the most consistent. From what i've read, the Canon 6ds metering isn't as consistent as an old 40d (assuming the 6d in the thread I linked to wasn't faulty). The fact that you can't just re-shoot a wedding if your pics are the wrong exposure and the fact that touching them up afterwards is never as good as getting them right in the first place, would be a big reason why i'd stick with the 40d or maybe get a 7d, 70d or save up for a 5d mk iii.
 
A 5D MKII is perfectly capable of weddings and would suit your needs much better than a crop, with the lenses you have.

Also, as mentioned a flashgun could be something to think of
 
I agree with a 5D2. It is more than capable for portraits and weddings and with decent glass will happily work at higher than normal ISO.

I'd say those lenses are begging for FF, so a 2nd hand 5d II would be my recommendation.

Respectfully, in the current line up the 70d or possible 7d is the top of the range crop. My first dslr was a 50d (I only had it a while before it was stolen), and the 7d was a big step up.

I've only just started using a full frame camera and it blows away my 7d crop camera in terms of everything, apart from amateur features.

Respectfully, you can't judge all FF cameras by the 1dx:cuckoo:

The 6d has many more 'amateur' features than the 7d;)
 
Yep, Personally I'd go 6D rather than 5DII if I could not in any way buy mkIII. Similar money, but at least you get one stop better sensor if nothing else, plus it is not trashed by another wedding pro with "just barely 750 shots on the clock".

And I'd get rid of 24-105 + Sigma 24-70 for Tamron 24-70 and simga 35mm

And you may like 85mm f/1.8 for just over £200

Phil, as an avid and proud amateur I will make it clear. I like these features. I loved my 7d, in a way I wish I never sold it (actually I am gutted as I've just had a big invoice paid into my account and now I feel like a moron), but it was never great at iso 6400, infact it was ugle... The idx will handle that with ease. Most people say that the 6d is better in this respect than than the 5diii. I can't see a 40d getting even close to it.

I'm not getting into whats a good camera and whats not. But the simple question is... If you were changing camera would you prefer a 6d or a 40d? Assuming you have the same lenses at the OP.

Much as I am personally a crop sensor stalwart (for the foreseeable future*) it's a no-brainer to me.

(*for me it's a different issue, I'd have to change 2 quite expensive lenses for their even more expensive relatives and I have 4 bodies to upgrade :gag:)
 
Out of the options discussed, I'd also plump for a secondhand low-use 5DMK2 (they do exist); you'll pay a premium over a well-used example, of course, but it shouldn't be a show-stopping difference. Just because a new FF camera has been released, it doesn't automatically make the old one rubbish.

If it were my money though, I'd sell the lot and get an X-Pro1 and an X100s as a second body. I'm possibly biased though :)
 
I Would go for a low frame count 1dsmk2 thats the path i took when i was in the same situation. Pro bodies a joy to use
 
I'd go for a 6d. It's not *that* much more than a mint 5d2 and performs better in low light from what I've read.
I wouldn't sell my 5d2 to get one but if I was buying today (and couldn't stretch to a 5d3) that's what I'd do.
