Well I think I do know the answer to this but just thought I would run it by you guys...

A few months ago I sold my 5D1... big mistake! I bought a 600D in it's place, but now I'm moving back to the 5D1, that's a definite. Along with the 5D1 I have a Sigma 24-70 2.8 DG HSM version, now for a second lens... I was thinking along the lines of 70-200 2.8, Sigma EX APO version... or an 85 1.8... they are just soooo sharp!

So that's the dilemma, 70-200 or 85 1.8, what would you do?
 
I'd get a 70-200 out of those 2 lenses. Have you thought of going for a more modern full frame body? A used 5D MKII etc?
 
Yea that's what my thoughts were... I had thought about it... but really can't stretch to it, however the mk1 is brilliant, shot a lot of stuff with it last year and the performance blitzed anything I modern I used (crop, 500/600/7D) noise-wise. So untill I get some more cash I will be sticking with the mk1 for the time being.
 
out of those two I'd go for the versatility of the zoom, ideally you'd have both I have an 85mm f1.8 and a 70-210mm f4 in the bag.
 
Personally would sell the 24-70, not bother with the two lenses you mention and buy a Canon 24-105mm IS

Admittedly depends if you need the f/2.8, but the IS compensates for that a bit anyway, just have to ask yourself what focal length range do you commonly use?

The Canon 70-200 f/4 is a bargain lens as well that might be worth a look.
 
Can you stretch to both if you buy second hand. My 85 1.8 cost me £185 and it's brilliant but I'd rather have the versatility of the zoom if I could only afford one. I recently sold my Sigma 24-70 f2.8 DG HSM and bought a Canon 24-70 f2.8L II as a companion to my 70-200 f2.8L IS II and I would think they'll be my most used lenses this year. It depends on your budget but you could get a Sigma 70-200 f2.8 DG HSM (non OS) for around £400-450 with the OS versions starting around £650 so you could probably sneak an 85 1.8 in if you're lucky.
