Looking for different peoples opinions on this one to try and help the saga of one of my mates and his choices. He cannot decide and I am not much use.

He has been using my camera and wants to get into photography, has got the bug to a large degree.

He has nothing just now and has up to £800 to spend.

How would you spend it?

He will mostly be taking pictures of landscapes with some family shots, some indoor.

All views appreciated :D

Question number 1, do you mind him borrowing your kit? That'll help you decide whether to suggest Nikon or Canon ;)

I have both formats and he is happy with either having tried both so no problem there although I feel he prefers Canon.

I am generous with my stuff, is only a camera after all, not like a kidney or similar :)

How about a 40D (if you can find one) and a Tamron 17-50 f2.8?

I guess arguably he could try and get a 5Dmk1 but that would not leave much £ for lenses.

20D can be had for around £200 I think and that might leave more money for additional lenses if required.

The 20d's are built like tanks, spend more on lenses (either quality or quantity of focal lengths). Then, later he could always upgrade the body & keep the lenses.

If it's Nikon he goes for then the D90 and a Tamron 17-50 f2.8 would be just about perfect although perhaps just outside his budget.
