I have a 18-55mm standard lens With the Nikon D3000, But I want to be able to get more of the scenery around the person/object in the picture, I mean would a wide lens do the job etc? Sorry Just thought i would ask :)

Of course, but a wide angle lens is not just for getting more in as you can also get up close and be creative.

Have a look at the range of lenses available in the 10-20mm sort of range from Nikon, Sigma and others.

or just move back which is cheaper (usually). UWA's introduce distortion, which sometimes you want, sometimes you don't. You wouldn't want to shoot a group of people with a UWA as the people on the end look really fat.

As Andrew has said, be aware of distortion with a wide angle.
I wouldnt take a pic with people in below the 18mm you already have. Unless already at some distance making the people pretty tiny in the pic.
