I am looking at purchasing my first telephoto lens. i dont have the funds for the L range but dont want something which isnt going to provide decent results either....

so

can anyone recommend a good telephoto lens which you would say 'you get a lot of lens for your money'

kind of like the nifty fifty, fantastic lens for £80 delivered :D

i dont mind recommendations for second hand lens's if the cost of it secondhand is a brilliant price for what the lens offers...

Probably best if you specify what your budget actually is, so that people can offer suitable suggestions :thumbs:
 
im a bit flexable on the budget, the cheaper the better as long as it doesnt compromise the quality to much. i would say somewhere between £100 - £400, just looking for the best lens for your money really....
 
That budget the two that I would choose from are the 55-250 IS or a 70-200 F4L.

The 55-250 is a great little lens for the money, sharp, lightweight and IS. You can find them new from £130 or so.

The 70-200 F4 is another belter, L series build quality, lovely and sharp and good residual value if you ever want to change it. It will also work on 1.3 crop (1 series) and full frame (1Ds and 5D) bodies if ever you go that way which the 55-250 won't. You can find them used from £350 or so. You can also use the Canon converters with this but depending on which converter and which body you've got you may lose autofocus.

70-200 F4L (see, you do have money for L glass ;)) Job done. Failing that, 55-250 IS.

Another vote for the 70-200F4L, I borrowed my Dad's a while back and some of my favourite pictures were taken with that lens, the colours are great!
