right people i am wondering if you can help me in my search for a good zoom lens, at the moment i have a NIKON 55-200MM F/4-5.6G DX VR but i would like something longer. in the past i had a sigma 70-300 apo DG and loved it, but its long gone with my old sony a200. right it will be a part christmas present from my other half and the sale of my 70-200, i have about £500 to play with for this, should i be looking at the Nikon 70-300mm VR, or get a teleconverter for my 55-200, it also needs to auto focus on my D5000

or what else is there that i should look at???

cheers people.

IMO, you've hit the nail on the head with the 70-300 VR. It's an AF-S lens so will AF etc on your D5000 and will outperform a 55-200 and teleconverter in terms of sharpness etc as well. The only slight downside may be losing the 55-70 range but that's usually fairly easy to overcome using foot-zoom (moving backwards to get a little more in at 70mm). Should you ever decide to move to FF, you can keep the 70-300 since it's an Fx suitable lens, so could save you a few quid if you do upgrade your body.

70-300VR.
Lots of folk have been on hear singing it's praises.

ok cool, cheers, but is there a something to 400 or 500mm i could look at????? not sure if i need that much but could be cool, not to worried about losing the 55-70 as i seem to be using my 35 1.8 all the time.

or if i do go down the 70-300 what would a teleconverter set me back and would it have an impact on picture quality???

around the 400 ukp mark for an 80-400. But not sure whether AF on the d5000. Was eyeing some on ebay but new is 400.
Think they are tamron or tokina... but might be slow.

if you stretch a bit the sigma 50-500mm is meant to be good, heavy but good. around the 800 ukp second hand.

Check flickr for results I guess :)
