WHAT'S BETTER THAN A NIKON D90 FOR THE PRICE

I'm on the hunt for my first DSLR and at the moment the D90 is winning, is there anything out there for the price that is better,I would prefer to buy brand new
 
Not in my opinion there isn't. It is a stunning camera for the money although I'm sure that the Canon/Sony/Olympus/Pentax guys will be along shortly to tell you otherwise.:lol:
Basically all the top camera companies produce really good kit and at the end of the day it comes down to what you feel you need. Have you tried any of the contenders out? Sometimes it can simply be ergonomics or how the menus are set out that decides the issue. I went with Nikon originally because I found them more comfortable to hold and the menus seemed more user friendly, but thats just my opinion.

(still think you won't go wrong with a D90 though, I love mine.)

The D90 is a lot of camera for you're money. You certainly won't be dissapointed. If you're going to be mainly taking portraits however, maybe take a look at a 2nd hand Fuji S5.
 
D90 should be getting replaced with a new model at photokina ;)

question, would all my d3000 lenses ( af-s ) work on a d90 ?
 
Rumour has it that yesterday Nikon asked all stores to remove display models of the D90 and they are no longer shipping them out. So if you want a bargain, I'm sure the D90 will be had at crazy low prices quite soon (due to possible replacement?), and it really is an amazing camera for the price.

On the face of it No, but better is a relative term. So, it depends upon your budget and other criteria. For £180 less you can get the D5000 which is smaller, lighter and less complex (albeit with fewer functions) but which, according to KR 'offers the technical image quality of Nikon's best DX cameras like the D300s and D90'. My newly arrived D5000 has just displaced a D90 from my bag for a trip to Africa!

Just food for thought, please don't let me dissuade you from the D90 as it's a great camera and will be particularly good value if they are discounted following the introduction of a newer model. And I'm not sure that I will be hankering after whatever features the new model brings along as I believe that Nikon DSLRs are now more or less 'mature' and most improvements will be 'nice, but not essential' until there is a step-improvement in technology.
 
O/T - it feels like the D700 is getting a replacement as well.

D90 is a cracking camera 100% very good for all situations.

Is there any reason why you really want to buy a new camera? I know you get piece of mind that you know what you are getting and it'll be all shiney and perfect when you take it out of the box but why not consider a second hand camera. I'd still recommend getting a D90 but why not save yourself a fwe quid and get a nearly new one that's been looked after and you'll have money to put towards another lens or a bag or whatever.
 
I've been on the edge of picking up a D90 for a while now, and it does seem like great value for the complete package. However, two things are currently stopping me.

First, you can achieve the same image quality on a D5000, which has largely the same features, but without a built-in motor (since your lenses are AF-S, this doesn't matter), and with a rotating screen, for a little less money.

Second, there is a very strong possibility a direct successor to the D90 is on its way in the next few months - so you might want to hold out either for the successor, or for the drop in D90 prices which will closely follow.

Still, if I see a bargain D90, I'm going straight for it!
 
I bought one for my wife but don't tell her as I've kept it.

D90 is awesome learn to use it properly and it will cope with any type of photgraphy you care to mention, it is just utterly competent in every respect. Dont worry about it being out of date, you will be able to produce stunning A2 enlargements, how big do you want tp go?
 
From my research on the same subject Pentax k7 seems to be a good value unless you need high ISO

Thats the whole point about the D90 really, it does whatever you ask of it well......

the trouble is Rob, a second hand D90 is nearly as dear as a new one, the price is so competitive at the moment,and if it's true it might be replaced in the near future with discount it's going to be even cheaper,making it hard for anybody to sell second hand and make some money back.

sorry Richard I never seen your post,mainly nature,landscape,wildlife,and I suppose I will have my arm twisted to do some portraits,by my 2 daughters,every girl wants to be a mogul,(lol).
 
Ibe got the D5k and it is excellent. If I had the finds I might've gone for the d90 but the pull put screen and user friendliness was fairly importAnt to me anyway.

Yes, define "BETTER" is what I said. Faster max shutter speed? 10-pin accessory port? ability to add a grip? ability to use manual controls for HD video? better high ISO performance? what?

What's "better" will depend on your needs, for the PRICE. Some aspects may be better in other cameras, some aspects may be worse, you could pick any random body and rarely get better EVERYTHING for the same price.
 
I doubt the brand new D90 will be cheaper than it is now if a new model is released. If you look at what Nikon has done previously, old stock just dries up rather than them selling it off cheaply, so they just restrict supply. So don't get too excited about a cheap D90 :)
 
As a Canon user and trainer on all cameras I reckon the D90 is currently best bang for your buck based on what i've seen over several sessions with them. John

Have a look at a 4/3 camera, its good if you are starting out and you have a huge array of used lenses to try. Check out the GF1 thread it is worth a look. The D90 is a good camera and will last but decent Nikon glass is expensive and you can get excellent results using other combo's

Nope D700 isn't being replaced this year ;)

Something is going to happen though, can't say what though but neither is the D90 or D300s but maybe something else might appear ;)
 
Darren, rumours are for the 90 and 700 replacements at Photokina (minor upgrades in both cases).......spill the beans if you know more!

Realistically it seems DSLRs have reached a peak for the current technology, maybe model life will be rather longer now.

Nikon have publically said they aren't going to replace the D700 this year. They'll be alot of annoyed dealers if they do
 
I had a play around with a friend's D5000 and was mega impressed. how do they compare price-wise? some nice features on them.

I had considered the D5000, but the price of the D90 has got really close to it, and from what I have read the extra is worth it.
