What's compatable with Canon DSLR please?

Hi, newbie to the forum and haven't taken any serious pics for a while. I've always put a decent DSLR out of my mind because they're out of my price range. However, I've still got my Canon EOS 600 and bits and recently noticed someone saying the bits can be used with a DSLR which has made me look again. I'm using a 14MP thing at the moment but I sure miss my SLR.
Can someone help me out here with what I can use with what DSLR in the £300/£400 (body only) range. Don't mind used.
I have a:
Canon EF 35-70 :3.5-4.5A
Canon EF 70-210 1:4
A Vivitar 636AF flashgun

Any Canon DSLR would do the trick, not sure about the flash? In that price, you'd just sqeeze in a 450D body....though might be worth saving a bit longer and getting the £450 canon 500D?
 
EF Lenses will work with any Canon DSLR , not sure about the flashgun though.
 
Your two lenses will work with any Canon DSLR - if the flashgun is an auto model then it will not work.

If you are looking for a DSLR I recommend you find one with a kit 18-55mm lens. THe reason for this is DSLR in your budget all use what is known as a 'crop' sensor. By this it only uses the centre portion of a full 35mm frame. This is better explained > HERE <
 
yeah ... lenses ok ... flash - you need to check the trigger voltage is ok for the DSLR. if it's too high, it can damage the flash circuitry on the camera body
 
As above, lenses will work fine, flash probably won't directly on camera, could poss be used as a seperate manual flash.

Don't think you'd be disappointed with the 450D, 500D adds video function if thats of any interest, you might be able to find a 2nd hand 40D

While all your stuff will work, including the flash but probably in a very limited way, your lenses will not give the same field of view you're used to, because of the cropped sensor. Effective focal lengths are increased by the Canon crop factor of 1.6x so your handy walkabout 35-70 becomes equivalent to 56-112mm.

While this is workable, you'll want to upgrade to newer lenses before long. The lastest flash systems are also very good so, even if you can get the Vivitar to do something, you won't be able to take full advantage of the new technology available.

Having said that, the kit lens with a 450D is the very good value 18-55 IS, which is right up there technologically and relatively cheap. It will give you the field of view equivalent to 29-88mm on a film camera.

My lenses will work but not properly so we're back to what I can't afford.
If I have to buy body and lens, I don't have to be restricted to Canon. Is there a recommended cheaper kit with bells and whistles that doesn't carry the Canon price tag?

As said above you lens are ok I not think the flash be much good if it will work (check trigger voltage) it be in manual
As for what to get I think for your budget you be best off with a S/H 40D the ***D will be much smaller and lighter to what you have used with film all the **D&#8217;s are metal bodies and I think fell much better in your hand, helping to hold steady.

Don't assume as others say that you will want to automatically upgrade because optically you have a couple of sound lenses that are very good and will give you 50-300 mm coverage.Ok you might want something wider but use your old lenses well and see what the results are like before consigning them to the bin of history
 
Look on the bright side :) Your 70-210 will become like a 112-336mm f/4 zoom and should make a good pairing with a (cheap but good) 18-55 IS kit lens. Nissin make good value cheaper flashes with full Canon E-TTL compatability. Not massive extra cost.

Canons are probably the makers choice, though others are also very good. They are very competitively priced. See www.camerapricebuster.com
