Hi all,

Over time my c drive which only contains Vista, Programmes and documents in Doc folder and the desktop, has got full. Over past few months I have removed files from desktop and this took drive out the red. Then it starts to fill again.

Now after removing stuff in disc cleanup and desktop I am still only 1% from a full c drive.

C drive is 72 GB. Programmes only account for 4.16 GB.

There are no pic, music or video on the c drive as all that is on my E drive. My virus scan is fully up to date and when i search for viruses none are found.

Does anyone know what is happening and what i can do?

Regards ,

John

have you tried to empty recycle bin ?
empty temporary internet files etc

Download CCleaner and run it. It'll probably be your temp directory that's causing the problem.

Open windows explorer, right click on each folder, select 'properties' and see which folder is full of stuff you need to delete.

what about windows recovery ?
if you have it switched on, its possible windows has loads of system images stored in case you want to go back ...

Do you have system restore switched on? you could try deleting old restore points

also do have show hidden and system files checked so you can see all files

John,

Vista does grab a lot of disk space for system restore. I never advise people to turn it off but you can limit what space it takes. First you need to open a command prompt as adminitrator (right click on its icon in the programs menu) and type:

vssadmin list shadowstorage

That will show you what space is being used. If you want to reduce it type:

vssadmin Resize ShadowStorage /For=C: /On=C: /Maxsize=5GB

5GB is not a recommendation - just an example. Set it to whatever you like.

Also worth trying out TreeSizeFree -it'll give you a graphical view of what folders are taking up the most space.

I find the best software for seeing where your space has gone is SpaceMonger, the latest version is a 30 day trial before you have to register but I actually prefer the older version 1.4, you can still get this from their official site http://www.sixty-five.cc/download/ and it's still completely free.

That's "SpaceMonger v1.4.0" at the bottom of the page, if you want the latest version instead go to the "Official Releases" tab

I have had a new virus checker installed which used up huge amounts of space quarantining infected files. Next scan it would find the infected file in quarantine, clean it, and put another copy in quarantine. Very quickly expanded to take up my free disk space. Now I clear quarantine each week and no problems since then.

I just down loaded TreeSizeFree Jam software and it shows that Bridge cs4 is using 8.3 GB of my hard drive. Why does bridge have this and is it safe to remove? **It is located in the Cache folder of bridge.**

Thanks,

John

Is Bridge open or closed?

Open Bridge and do: Tools->Cache->Purge

Then change the location of the cache with Edit->Cache->Location and possibly change cache size (same tab).

PS. I don't partition user/system disk - don't see the point. I have a 2Tbyte system/user disk here with 1.6Tbytes free...

As above, Vista eats into the HDD space everytime it performs any updates.

You might have already done this, but if you go to properties on your HDD, then Disk Cleanup for all users then click on the More options tab and choose clean up for system restore, this removes all the old restore points that eat away at space
