Hello,
I've been looking at getting a filter for general shooting outside and for occasional landscape.
What do you think would be more useful, a circular polariser or rectangular filter system with a ND grad ?
I'd use it on either my Nikon 12-24 or Nikon 17-55.
Are there instances where you would use both filters together ?
Thanks.

To be honest I don't bother with a pola filter, I'd go with the grad filter, but it's personal choice.

I go the other way, I often use a polariser but have never bothered with grads. Good luck using either with the 14-24 - not sure that lens can use any sort of screw in filter, although I think you can bodge square ones onto the hood with blutack or similar.

CPL 2, ND 1

One filter you can't really PP around is a polariser.

That said, a CPL won't cover a UWA effectively - it's so wide that the polarising effect can't span the whole image, resulting in patchy effects.

The other filter that you can't really PP around is an ND filter so if I were you I'd get one of those.

Thanks for the replies.
About a 50-50 split for CPL vs Grad.
I think I'll eventually have to try both to see which one suits me best :) starting with a grad for the 12-24 .
Cheers.

Polariser for sure. Then a dark ND, if you like long exposures. You can't replicate either of those effects in post processing.

Then a couple of grads if you like that way of working, but a decent system like Lee is an expensive and cumbersome affair. I prefer to do that kind of thing in PP - easier, better.
