Hey guys ,

Just a query ....

I'm just about to order a tamron 17-50 f2.8 from warehouse express . They have it advertised for £289 but I've seen sites like simply electronics selling it for £229 along with a few other sites?

Am I missing something here?
 
Simply are based in Hong Kong so will be a grey import and you will probably have to pay tax and customs on top.

I would avoid them, just do a search anywhere on the web and you'll see why.

Not strictly true, Canon lenses come with international warranty, and will be covered no matter where you buy it, the same doesn't apply to their cameras. They've been trying to get the law changed to enforce international warranty on all items, no matter from where its sourced e.g. if a camera is built at the same factory, but one is sold at a third of the price of another, why should it matter where it was bought from, they were both built at the same factory under the same QA.
I believe Sigma only do local warranties, no idea about Tamron.

If you buy it from WEX you get the benefit of the full 5 years manufacturers warranty and you can have it delivered before 10.30 a.m if you need it in a rush.

absoloutly bob on.. only nobody believes me when i tell them becuase theres lots of stories from people with imported cameras who do manage to get warranty work done in UK..

I checked wiht canon before my purchaese and canon confirmed by email that imported lens are covered but not bodies..

You get the benefit of 'a' warranty, and yes it's 5 years.

Tamron are one of the biggest anti-grey manufacturers around, and will usually not even touch a lens that they suspect/know is grey market.

They've even gone as far as (successfully) suing UK vendors that sell grey market Tamron lenses.

WEX are most definitely an official Tamron distributor, as I bought my SP70-300 from there and registered the full 5-year warranty.

IIRC the page even said that it came with 'full UK warranty', because I know how strict Tamron are on grey imports, and wanted to at least have some warranty other than 'we'll get someone to repair it' since I've had bad experience with 3rd party repairs from vendors in the past.

there is a massive and i mean massive difference between a manufacturers warranty and a suppliers warranty... you posted you get a 5 yr manufacturers warranty if you buy from wex... I ask if your sure about that?

I'm sure, yes, I have an email from Tamron confirming my 5-year warranty with them for a A005 lens purchased from WEX.
 
Out of interest ... what does the warranty include? Obviously a fault with the lens, but what if you're just being a bit picky and think it's a poor copy for some reason, can you send it to be checked / calibrated?

TAMRON Europe GmbH Cologne’s UK agent: (“INTRO 2020”) assumes the following obligations for the TAMRON product you have purchased in the UK:

1. If Intro 2020 are notified of a production-related defect within 5 years of the purchase date (from 01.04.2010), Intro 2020 will repair the product free of charge or, if required, replace it with a defect-free product.

2. Guarantee claims for calibrating the sharpness and sharpness settings are only valid for the camera model registered with us because these characteristics may vary under certain circumstances when using other models.

3. This guarantee excludes the repair of defects caused by (intentional or unintentional) operating errors (see operating instructions), improper treatment of the product or changes to the product. This includes the misuse of the product for other purposes, improper repairs/service interventions carried out by third parties not authorised by TAMRON or incorrect storage and use under extreme conditions. Defects caused by external forces such as dropping, impact, sand, dirt, liquid or improper transport are also not covered by this guarantee. The same is also true when parts are placed under particular stress under proper use and become worn as a result.

4. No claims can be made that go above and beyond or are excluded by our General Terms & Conditions, particularly claims for compensation for consequential damage of any kind (e.g. loss of earnings, battery replacement, replacement film due to incorrect exposure, compensation for film development costs, photographer fees/travel costs etc.). Should other non-excludable statutory regulations exist beyond these conditions then these remain unaffected.

5. Guarantees and commitments provided by third parties that go above and beyond those guarantees and product characteristics issued by TAMRON themselves are not obligatory for TAMRON unless they have been expressly confirmed by TAMRON.

6. This guarantee is an extension to existing statutory regulations and does not in any way restrict the customer’s existing rights.

7. If one of the named conditions of the guarantee becomes invalid due to statutory regulations, the remaining conditions continue to remain in force.

Looks to me that it could be argued that a poor copy is a 'production fault', and the warranty appears to cover body+lens calibration - but only for the body it's registered against (I'm unsure if, say I upgrade to a d800, if I can change the registered body for my lens).

Yes I am because I recently bought the lens the o.p is talking about form WEX and have the 5 year warranty and it was shipped to me next day before 10.30a.m
