Sorry I know very little about Nikon's but I read that they were also 1.6 crops mainly. Oh well.
Is the 5D II really considered to be 'better' than a 1Ds III?
I know it's all what you want it for and so on, but lets say for example the actual image quality. You can generally tell on a whole if a camera is 'better' or not.

It's also called an APS-C sensor, but the crop factor is a little different.
Nikon, Pentax, Sony (APS-C) - 1.5X
Canon (APS-C) - 1.6X
Canon claims the image quality of the 5D Mark II to be slightly better, but results are almost equal.
The 1Ds Mark III has some strong points, like a 100% coverage viewfinder, much better built, full weather sealing, a very fast and accurate AF system, longer life shutter and so on...
For some people those extras are essential so, the 5D mark II can't be consider as a replacement.
Talking about 5D Mark II, I can't wait to receive mine at the end of this week.
