What's THE best B/S head?

Arca Swiss, RRS, Markins are probably the best, then Kirk and Acratech close behind.

I do not think they are expensive.

They cost more than the others because they work better, in macro for example compose the subject, lock down the head and it stays put, on cheaper heads the lens will droop slightly, loosing your composition.

That is exactly the problem I'm having  I've only noticed it recently when I was doing some architectural stuff and it needed to be spot on.

Might be time to look at some other heads.

Is there a UK distributer for RRS?

Unfortunately not..you have to order online through their website and pay by US$ and then the item is shipped, incurring tax and import duty.

By the way, I have the BH-55 (RRS) ballhead and it's simply awesome engineering. Very chunky and solid and the ball is super smooth :)

No RRS is USA only, Arca Swiss - Robert White, Markins - HERE, Acratech and Kirk - Wharehouse Express.

I have the Arca Swiss Z1, and also have an Acratech the Arca Swiss is the better of the two. I like the look of the Markins though.

Review / comparison HERE

If you go for the Arca Swiss Z1, do not go for the flip lock, get the normal screw lock plate. Whilst the flip lock is great for quick change I would not trust it to heavy loading as I use with a sidekick.

Well my BH-55 doesn't budge a mm, even with a heavy lens/camera combo, can't vouch for the Arca Swiss, although I suspect that doesn't creep either...

Arca Swiss stays put, the other option is a geared head Manfrotto do several geared heads starting from around £135, may offer more precise composition.

Arca Swiss do a geared head the C1 starts at around £1100 :gag:
