:nono: But in that 18 months the price of brand new lenses went through the roof and thus so did second hand prices.
Cliché answer:
The best lens of course is the one that captures the moment! Lenses are no good if they are in your bag and you have to fumble to get them out to change them around.
More importantly the insight and fore-thought as to how to capture the 'next' shot, is probably just as important. Something that comes with good equipment and shooting experience.

If you want a workhorse lens, 17-55 is the choice. Or a fast 35 prime 
Make sure you take a flash. Not optimal, but some dark rooms make them mandatory. If you get a group of people approach you for a portrait (which they're likely to purchase as a print) in a dark reception room (especially at party time), a fast lens won't cut it - too shallow DoF - you'll have out-of-focus eyes.
You can bounce the flash off a side wall or the ceiling to good effect, just make sure you never hit them directly. Aiming the flash over the top of YOUR head gives a nice soft light, especially if you bounce off a wall behind you. If you bounce 45 degrees above their head, make sure you bounce the flash between your lens and the subject, otherwise the light will hit them from directly above (or worse; from behind) and cast nasty shadows over face.
You can also whack up the ISO to 800 to conserve flash battery and make it go further.
