Hello i bought a Tamron 90mm macro lens for my sony a300 and have a jessops flash, what would be the best ring flash for use with the lens.

do i get one that matches the camera? or the lens?

thanks for any advice

if the camera can fire a flash - yes - look at the sigma website

there is a Sony compatible version of the Sigma EM-140 DG.
Metz also do a similar ringflash which is cross platform compatible, the 15 MS-1.
Or there is the Sony HVL-MT24AM Macro Twin Flash.

best of the lot was the Minolta 1200 with the MFC-1000 but Sony in their wisdom dropped that when they took the system over :( & now they go for a small fortune s/h (you'll find 1200 Ringflashes relatively cheaply but you need the MFC-1000 not the earlier controller or you just get full power).

If you already have a flash, the why don't you consider some of the more Heath Robinson approaches in this thread?.

I have gone down the same route as Stan-the-man, and I have to say I am as pleased as punch. I am glad now that I didn't spend the £500 nicker or so on the ring flash when I have managed it for approx £35!!! I certainly don't think that my macro shots with flash look as though they are taken with a considerably cheaper set up.

I just bought the Sigma version off someone moving systems and it only arrived yesterday. Managed to get off about 3 shots before it started pouring with rain. Was used with my old manual Adaptall 2 Tamron 90mm f2.8 macro lens .. few pics HERE, HERE and HERE if you are interested.

Looks a well built bit of kit and it has lights either side rather than 1 big round tube so you can use just the one to give different lighting .. not tried anything like that yet though.
