whats the best way...

you want to take photographs of printed photographs?

If that is correct I would imagine that a tripod is needed, as well as good ambient lighting.

the use of a flash would put glare on to the photo surface.

you also need a flat surface to mount the picture too to.

Your best bet would be tripod looking down and blue tack photo to table.

Never done it myself though.

Years ago, before digital, I took photos of photos using an ordinary 100W bulb light each side of the photo. The bulbs were inside home made reflectors. I guess a couple of good halogen desk lights would do these days. The camera was mounted above on something that may have been an old microscope mount - not sure. But it had a rack and pinion thing which allowed me to adjust up and down easily. So maybe a tripod that allows the support vertical to be mounted horizontally perhaps.

MyPhotoBook - used them once with a reduced price offer via a camera mag for a small book. Done in Germany. Excellent quality, but took something like 3 or 4 weeks.

I've used Photobox a few times. Good value compared to many, even more so when they do their offers. I haven't looked recently but I don't like their books having a hole cut out on the front cover and forcing you to waste a page on a small picture to fit it. I don't know if they've changed anything. It has been over a year since I last used them. I also found the book design web pages to be buggy and irritating to use. I'd still use them again though, I suppose, when they have an offer on.

you get better results using a flat bed scanner which you can pickup used from flebay.

Definitely. In my case though, it being over 20 years ago, we didn't have scanners then and it would have been so much easier. Some of mine wouldn't have fitted on a standard size scanner. Then there were some glued in to albums which wouldn't lay flat, even under pressure.

photographs....reflect light...even if you use 2 45* lamps you will get some lighting going on on the surface

i use a scanner at 450 dpi
