What's the best wide angle zoom for a. 7D

Looking at getting a wide angle zoom for my 7D what options have I got which are not necessary Canon ?
 
I'd consider the Canon 10-22 or the Tokina 11-16, though to be fair you don't get a massive ammount of zoom with lenses this wide.

I suspect a 17-55 might give more zoom but less wide.
 
Well as the lens will not be used all the time I cannot warrant £600 so I suppose this limits my options
All my other lens are L series but as this will not get loads of use a lesser quality one will do
 
Would help to know what lenses you already have, what your budget is and what you consider wide angle? Everyone is instantly recomending the ultra wide zooms but they may not be the best option id a 24mm equivalent will suffice.

You wont get an L lens in the 10-22mm type range. Don't think so anyway, and AFAIK there are no L zooms with a starting point wider than 16mm and there'll probably not be an EF-S zoom carrying a L in our lifetime.

I've read in more than one place that the Canon 10-22mm has "L quality optics" so that may suit you. I have had one of those and IMVHO it was a rather average optic both in optical performance and build and you may therefore be better off looking at a 3rd party lens.

I've the Sigma 10-20mm lens and am very happy with it.

I went through a similar decision as yourself and opted for the Sigma. If you have a look at the flickr account below, I took these for my mate using the Sigma lens...
 
If you're used to having top quality lenses then you've really got just one option - Canon 10-22.
 
I've got a tokina 11-16 , it's pretty good, I haven't used it much ive been happy with the pictures I've taken with it, I don't feel the need to sell it and go for the canon
 
Tokina 11-16 by a country mile - best UWA out there. The Tokina 12-24 comes a close second for sheer VFM, then the Canon because it is a nice lens and it's got a good zoom range, but it's expensive.
 
I own both the Canon 10-22 and the Tokina 11-16. The latter is only ever used for wide-field astro shots, the flare control of the Tokina is so bad that it's just not good enough for use in sunshine.
 
OP might like to consider the Siggy 8-16. This gives a pretty unique perspective at the wide end and is obviously great in very tight shooting situations. Had one in Sony fit and loved it. Fast AF, shrp, great colours, what is not to like ?
 
The two most disappointing lenses I've ever owned were the Canon EF-S 10-22mm and the 17-85mm.

My issues with the 10-22mm were vignetting, distortion and sharpness. All things are relative of course and whilst I wouldn't expect wide angle zoom to be completely free of vignetting and distortion and to be completely razor sharp the Canon didn't meet my expectations. It could of course have been a bad copy but some of the on line reviews I've read seem pretty much in line with my own experiences of the lens.

Just to balance things a little... many people like the 10-22mm and many people slate the Sigma 12-24mm which I my experience simply thrashes the Canon EF-S in every respect except ultimate width :D YMMV :D

Definitely the 11-16 is a superb lens :)
 
17-55 IS, take two shots, and use lightroom or similar to stitch them together should you need wider than 17mm.
 
That'll never give the same overall look as a wide angle will.

How do you think a 16-35mm canon would work with a 7D? I'm looking for a good wide angle for a wedding shoot next year and don't know what to go with?

fairly similar to 17-55, just without IS - what did you expect?

Does a 17-55 efs lens actually represent 17-55 or does the 1.6 fovc factor apply?

I've never said anything along these lines on here before as I usually encourage people but, if you are seriously asking that question you shouldn't be shooting a wedding!

Can't believe I actually asked that question myself now - senior moment I think lol. I usually shoot motorcycling events, using 7d and 70-200 so weddings are not normal stuff, just been asked by a friend as a favour.
 
I've had the sigma 10 - 20, and it was very good IMO.

I've heard good things about Canon and Tokina's offering too.

I've used the tamron, and it feels cheap in comparison to the Sigma, I wasn't overly pleased with the images either (although that could be me, not the lens)

Disagree entirely.

The 10-22 does have L grade optics, and it's by far the best UWA I've used on Canon.

I think he meant the build quality (or the plastic) is not L grade
