Whats the best Wireless Router/Modem for home use

No
Sadly my old modem packed in so bought a replacement D-Link to go with the Wireless Router I have.

For some reason, The modem connects through an ethernet connection direct and I can connect to the Wireless Router through the wirless network, but connect both and Zilch, zero, nothing.

I think possibly the router is damaged too, probably by a power surge.

So anyway I'm now looking for a combined unit, does anyone have any recommendations.

I'm swaying towards Linksys at the moment.

Up to you but I prefer Netgear.

On installs for businesses I get problems with linksys and Belkin far more oftern than with Netgear.

Thanks PSI, I used to use Netgear equipment quite a lot but sort of lost track on whats going on in the networking game since getting into photography.

No problems with linksys (Cisco) here. I'd have thought any make would be fine though.

If you can see the router OK maybe it is just an IP address clash stopping it working. might be worth changing the address in the routers config pages to see if it will work.

Thanks Robert IP's Gateway, Subnets all seem to be fine its like the modem wont communicate with the router, dhcp is set to on, on both units. Lost a whole day so far on it so decided to go combined, cheaper to buy than the money I've lost

Don't think you want dhcp on on both units. One needs to allocate IP's only (the router).... i think

I've had several netgear routers of the past few years and they never appear to last more than a couple of years, which is weird. After the last one malfuctioned I decided to use the free Home Hub BT provided a couple of years ago. Installation was automatic and it has a good range.

I'm assuming from your initial comments that we're talking ADSL, so on that basis I'd recommend either the Linksys WAG354G or it's replacement, the WAG200G.

Both are simplicity itself to set up and have a good, strong wireless signal. And while your mileage may vary on the signal front depending on the layout of your house, I've used and configured hundreds of both and they've proved to be extremely reliable.

The WAG354G was discontinued a while back so it's hard to find a new one, but the WAG200G can be picked up for under £40 from most reputable suppliers.

Thanks Organic and Glitch

I borrowed a WAG54G from a mate, its an old one and the PSU was stuffed but I had a similar 12v 1A supply and tried it, 2 minutes to set up and working great, so looking at the updated version

If it's working fine I wouldn't bother looking for a replacement. The internals are virtually identical to the WAG354G - the newer model has an internal antenna and slightly revised firmware.

Thanks Glitch, but only borrowed this one albeit without a PSU, at least we would have a working spare between us, should the need arise.

Does the replacement have the same range. Old house with thick walls

Think a visit to the shops this weekend is on the cards

The best combination is a WAG354G and the Linksys HGA7S High Gain Antenna. Any time I had a problem setting a wireless network up in older properties I'd resort to that combination and it worked like a charm.

If you're interested I've got a new HGA7S in the house and I might even have a WAG354G tucked away somewhere. I can have a look later on and get back to you.
