Cheaper and easier to upgrade ram rather than the processor so at first glance I'd go for numero 1. (especially seeing as you get 5GB of RAM ;))

Even though the 2nd machine is more expensive in the first place but with a huge discount.

Ah, but one has to ask why is it being discounted so much? What's the make and model, some more specs would help.

Try this machines 1 and 2 in the order as written down here in your mind/eyes which is the better buy but same price, had chose a different one but they cannot deliver for a month for some reason  so out of these 2

Machine 1 has a faster processor, but less RAM.

Machine 2 has a slower processor, but more RAM.

Processor speed on Machine 1 also appears to be supplimented by a large interntal cache (3MB), which does not appear to be the case with the processor in Machine 2.

All other specs being equal, I would buy Machine 1, and add more RAM to it yourself. One slight catch may be available socket space for the RAM - you will need to check this.

Machine 1 may have 2 sockets, each with a 1GB module in it. Machine 2 may have 2 sockets, with a 2GB and a 1GB socket. So, to increase the RAM on machine 1, it could be that you would need to buy a 2GB module, and dispose of a 1GB module.

gman - which machine do you think has 5GB RAM?

(As a non tecchie) which one would you go for:shrug: or anyone for that matter

intel processors are generally for number crunching, video or pics you are better with amd so im led to believe

O.K lets see what you suggest me to buy budget £500 to run photoshop 7 must have 17.3 screen please over to you ;)

How much are both these, Im pretty sure you could get something better for not much more and build it yourself.

If it were me, Id be looking for at least an i5 processor, at least 4GB RAM, 64 bit Windows, and a dedicated graphics card.
If its for image editing, you will need a bigger hard drive too I imagine as you will fill 250GB up pretty quickly.

Intel are fine for video and Pics, why do you think iMacs have intel chips???
All my machines are intel and all work fine for picture editing.

When she first posted she had a number "1" against both ram listings so I made a joke about it but has corrected it since - so I now look stupid

Me build/order machine I have not got a clue where I am going on this.

Seem to be going round in circles here as I can't afford to make a mistake  just want a good all round lappie for photos etc in the budget of $500 inc vat have increased it from £400 already but spending no more, am getting tired of this now (like a few others reading my posts) but as I know nothing about these things I don't want to make a costly mistake.:bang:

Ah, you want a laptop????

Right ok, different ball game then.

What make are we talking about here? Acer, Sony etc? Also, £500 seems a little high for that spec (no Nvidia or ATI graphics card!!!!) or maybe I'm out of touch?

Dell, was originally going for the Inspiron 3700 then was talked out of that one and now looking at the Vostro 3700. Because I am not a tecchie I have no idea what things are and if the salemen in the shop see me coming then they are on to a good thing so am getting more and more confused and scared in case I purchase the wrong one.

Laptops have gone to silly money these days.
I paid £500 for my acer last year that was top if the range almost. Has dedicated Nvidia graphics, 4 GB ram etc.

Equivilent spec today is more £700!

You will get much better value looking at other options. Dell arent that great.

I can't affrod any more as it is I have gone from £400 to £500 (inc vat) (I do get the VAT backthough) but not looking at £500 + VAT over budget :bang:

Yeah I know, but just saying, laptops seem to have risen in price a lot. Getting the spec you want for that money is a little pushed, but it can be done. Just consider other options other than one brand.

Is the screen size set in stone or could you do a 15.6"?

Not everyone is going to have the same opinion and all I want at the end of the day if a Lappie that I can store/look/process photos on (elements 7) as well as other normal stuff that computers do i.e internet etc.

Going to get in to a e.g Canon/Nikon debate:shrug: lets not

Only chose that as my mother who is losing her sight likes to see my photos and cannot clearly see a 15.3 screen but I can be persuaded, also I wanted the number pad but then again I can buy a plug in one.

Im not doing that, there is nothing wrong with Dell, all I mean there is no reason just do stick with them. Its very limiting.

Bloody hell, had a wee look and they haven't half shot up in price!!!

I ran all sorts on a Core2Duo T5500 because it had an Nvidia card in it so I reckon it's probably more important to get one with Nvidia or ATI in it over a much faster processor - especially as you are wanting the bigger screen (which also ramps the price up).

Have you though about refurb or 2nd hand? There's usually someone here kicking about with a laptop on sale?

You could get a smaller screen which opens up a lot more options, but get one with an HDMI port (only if you have an HDMI telly though) and you could then plug the lappie into the TV to get huuge pics. well as big as the TV is anyhow

How about this one: Click here

Ticks all the boxes it seems.

The two machines you have specified are very similar. For photo processing either will be fine, my preference would be for number two as I'd rather have 50% more memory than a marginal increase in processor speed. This goes double if the graphics hardware is "on board" so uses shared memory rather than a separate dedicated graphics card (since this isn't mentioned I assume the graphics is shared memory).

O.K. I will go for smaller screen I had a look and the only one I can see is the Acer

Was advised against Acer - see what I mean never going to be right, am I?

Going to be a question of Dammed if I do and Dammed if I don't:shrug: scenario.

I would happily buy you a pint and this is out of stock in my area and probably not geting any more in, just checked, seems like I am jinxed on this as another one I had rodered had been dropped in the warehouse, and they are not gettting any more of them in either  :bang:

ah that sucks. They should really sort their website out. But, it does show that it's possible to get a spec at this price.

Have you tried Tesco, ASDA and other unlikely yet sometimes surprising places to get a lappy?

O.K. give me the specs I shoud be looking for then I am off down to PC world, Comet, Currys etc tomorrow and see what I can get:shrug: for the price I am prepared to pay needs to run Elements 7 also.
