ok ive decided im getting a 50mm for xmas but could some one tell me what the difference is between these please

Nikon AF-S 50mm f1.8G

Nikon 50mm f/1.8 D AF Lens

probably an easy one but im stuck

The D version is an older one with no built in focus motor (so no AF on bodies below the D80/D90 level) and an aperture ring, the G version has a focus motor and I think the lens design is also newer and I've heard it's a marginal optical improvement (can't say myself).
 
G has a focus motor so it will auto focus if you have a D3100 or D5100 as these don't have their own focus motor.
 
how hard is it to focus manually though

when i was in the well known camera shop they said as the depth of field is so shallow its very hard to manually focus so a auto is needed.

wasnt really listening to him though as 2 mins before he said canon nikon and the likes make a second rate lens and camera for companys to sell on the net, therefore i should buy it there and then and not look on the net for it,

Depends entirely on what you're shooting.

If you're shooting static stuff it's easy enough to get it right with live view, but for anything moving it'll be very hit and miss unless you practice a lot, especially on entry level cameras with a small viewfinder.

If you're ever going to shoot anything that moves, I wouldn't limit yourself to manual focus unless you want to get a lot of experience with it (and put up with a lot of hit and miss).

Before auto focus you had more indicators on the view finder so it was a bit easier to focus, view finders were also brighter and larger (like they are on full frame). Cameras are setup these days for auto focus.
