Whats the earliest Canon DSLR with live view, reasons for asking in my post

It doesn't particularly matter whether it's a full size 5d2 size body or the smaller 350d size body.

In fact the smaller version would be better for my needs.

Many moons ago ( pun intended :D ) I bought myself a telescope with fittings for a canon eos camera bodies.

Well seems to me a few peeps are getting interested so I dragged it out of it's obscurity from the back of a wardrobe and I'm going to have another play.

I've already found some great free sky watching software that I can computer control the scope with, if I can work out how.

Now I know I can tether shoot a Canon eos digital using EOS utility, but initially I'd like to use live view.

So.............................. whats the earliest model available with live view.

I don't know whether it was the 1dIII but when I was looking at my first DSLR the 40d was the only canon with live-view AFAIKnew at the time.
I got rhe 400d (no live view)
Do if you are looking at oldest=cheapest, then the 40d. but I am not sure how well it handles noise (the 400d which was meant to be the similar sensor without live-view, was not great on noise)
 
Didnt know the 1000D or 450D had it but i know the 40D does and you can pick them up for a decent price second hand now, and they are a cracking camera :)
 
I think the model that you REALLY want is the first that was offered with live view, the EOS 20Da, especially as your intended use is Astrophotography. However, trying to find one could be another matter entirely...

Other earliest possibilities are the 1000D, 450D and 40D, and all models subsequent.
 
Cheers folks, I was really looking for a cheap camera so I don't have to plug my 5D2 on. a 40D ( I sold mine last year ) is still more than I wanted to pay. I was hoping the maybe a cheap 400D might have been the answer. :D

450D would be as close as it gets...
 
Given the low high ISO noise of your 5D I would be mighty tempted, it will be streets ahead of the other listed camera's.

Also tether focusing and shooting is a lot easier than doing it manually, the downside there is your pressing buttons on the back of the camera that will at least transmit vibrations to the scope, which you don't really want whilst focusing.
Also depending on the type of telescope and the object your trying to shoot you can sometimes have to go through contortions or acrobatics just to see the screen!

With tethered shooting as well its easier to set up the shot, adjust the camera settings etc without disturbing the telescope.

1000D will be the cheapest option, followed by the 450D. Both cameras should be fine for what you want to do. Next price bracket up will be the 40D. The 1000D has slightly better high ISO performance that the 450D, but has no spot metering is a couple of mexapixels worse off. I use my 1000D for willdlife and it's fine :)
